🦇 UPDATED SHOP HOURS + ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT NEWS 🦇

Hey darklings, oddballs, collectors, creators, and curious creatures!

We recently extended our Friday and Saturday hours to 9PM in anticipation of the new DeKalb Entertainment District launching on June 1st. This district will allow alcoholic drinks to be carried within the downtown district and into participating businesses.

However, the City of DeKalb has let us know there will be a delay while they await the arrival of their official startup materials. The launch is now expected to happen around July 6th.

Because of that, we’ll be rolling our hours back for now. Once the Entertainment District officially launches, we’ll re-evaluate and consider extending our Friday and Saturday hours again.

We’ve also made the decision to keep Sundays alcohol-free at the shop. “Sober Sundays” are here to stay so our sober friends, followers, families, and younger shoppers can enjoy the store without alcohol inside. We also have younger staff working that day, so this keeps Sundays comfortable and appropriate for everyone.

The Indie Horror Film Festival hosted by Breaking Fate Entertainment is officially accepting submissions for our October event in Woodstock, Illinois!

Join us October 9th–11th at Needful Things Shop for a weekend filled with independent horror films, eerie creativity, and unforgettable cinematic nightmares.

Early Bird submission pricing is available for a limited time — now is the perfect time to get your film in front of horror fans, filmmakers, and industry creatives.

For 2026, we are officially opening with two main submission tiers:

Short Films (Up to 44 minutes)
Tight, sharp, and dangerous. Shorts are where horror often hits hardest, and we love showcasing films that can leave a bruise in under an hour.

Feature Films (45+ Minutes)
Full length nightmares with room to build atmosphere, characters, and escalating dread. If your story needs the full runway, bring it.

Our programming favors strong storytelling, confident filmmaking, and creators who take risks. We welcome a wide range of horror subgenres, including supernatural, creature features, slashers, horror comedy, thriller, experimental, and more.

This fun class is happening next Thursday May 21st at 7pm! Spaces are going fast for this fun experience

Decorate your very own jumping spider enclosure with Sara from Spooky Sweet Spoods!

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll create a fully customized enclosure using materials and decorations provided, all included with your ticket. Along the way, Sara will guide you through how to design a safe, enriching habitat specifically for jumping spiders, including what to include (and what to avoid). It’s the perfect opportunity to learn, get creative, and ask all your jumping spider questions in a fun, welcoming environment!

Don’t have a jumping spider yet? No problem! Sara will have i5/i6 P. regius (Regal) jumping spiders available for adoption at the event for an additional cost, so you can take home both a beautifully decorated enclosure and its adorable new resident.
