Dixie Alley will have to pay real close attention to this upcoming winter season. With this El Niño as strong as it is, and continuing to get even stronger, the South could see possible severe outbreaks with strong squall lines and possibly several tornadoes ⛈️🌪️

⛈️ FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 — SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK ⛈️

The severe weather threat looks much quieter across the Ohio Valley on Friday compared to Thursday.

🌦️ WHAT TO EXPECT:
• A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible
• Overall severe threat remains LOW
• An isolated strong storm cannot be completely ruled out
• No widespread damaging wind, large hail, or tornado threat is expected at this time

📍 OHIO VALLEY: Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas should see a much more subdued setup.

🌤️ Behind Thursday’s activity, conditions should become less humid with some sunshine, making Friday feel much more comfortable.

Friday currently looks like a LOW-END / NON-SEVERE DAY, but we’ll continue monitoring trends and model guidance for any changes.

⛈️ Today — Thursday, Sept. 3

The SPC has a Slight Risk (Level 2/5) covering portions of the southern Great Lakes into the Mid-Atlantic, including areas from Ohio/Pennsylvania toward western New York.

Primary threats:

* 💨 Damaging straight-line winds — biggest concern
* 🧊 Large hail
* 🌪️ Low tornado threat, but an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out
* ⛈️ Storms may organize into clusters/lines during the afternoon and evening.

For the Ohio Valley, storms are expected to develop/organize during the afternoon and move eastward toward OH → PA → NY through the evening

Severe weather possible across two separate regions today!

Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to develop from the southern Great Lakes into the Mid-Atlantic later today and tonight. A stalled surface front will help focus storm development, with the potential for a few organizing clusters capable of producing strong to severe wind gusts.

A separate Slight Risk covers the northern Great Plains into the Upper Midwest, focusing on North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. Favorable wind shear will support a few supercells capable of producing large hail and severe downbursts this afternoon and evening.

SEVERE WEATHER RISK UPGRADE‼️- Confidence has increased in a corridor for greater severe STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS🌬️ (UP to 70MPH), along with the chance of a STRONG TORNADO💪🌪️💪 across portions of Western .

🔴Storm REDEVELOPMENT is expected during the late afternoon & early evening hours (4pm-11pm) and will push across Lake Ontario/Lake America (I'm so over this). The damaging wind and tornado threat will peak just after sunset as storms move SEward across New York.

🔴REST OF MID-ATLANTIC: An ONGOING large line of thunderstorms producing damaging winds this afternoon will continue to march through & and Eastern & and will likely weaken by late afternoon somewhere in

TROPICAL UPDATE
2:30 PM SUNDAY 8/23/2026

BOTTOM LINE: No tropical threats to the Carolinas over the next 10 days.

🟠 DISTURBANCE #1 – Satellite imagery shows showers and thunderstorms becoming a little better organized around an area of low pressure about 400 miles southeast of Bermuda. Some additional development is possible, and this could briefly become a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next couple of days. The good news is it's moving away from Bermuda and the U.S., so it's no threat to us.

🟠 DISTURBANCE #2 – A tropical wave is expected to move off the west coast of Africa on Monday. Some models are pretty aggressive with development once it reaches the Atlantic, but I'm not sold on that happening quickly. There's still plenty of dry, stable air across the eastern Atlantic, which could make development a slow process.

Whether it develops right away or takes its time, the overall weather pattern continues to favor this system eventually turning north and out to sea. A persistent trough along the eastern U.S. should provide an escape route well before it gets anywhere near the U.S. coast. Bermuda may eventually need to keep an eye on it.

We're talking 10 - 15 days down the road, though, and that's an eternity in the tropics. The pattern looks reassuring right now, but I'll keep watching it as it makes the long trek across the Atlantic.

AN ISOLATED STRONG TORNADO IS POSSIBLE across the Mid-Atlantic today...

A hatched risk has been introduced for parts of Maryland, Delaware, southern Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. As severe storms fire up this afternoon and evening, there is a potential for a strong tornado (EF2 or greater) across the D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia areas!
