Does the government shut down have an impact on small businesses in our local area?
Yes.
Let me tell you how it’s impacting me….
I have been on an extremely long journey with the veterans affairs vocational rehab rehabilitation program.
For at least eight years. Maybe longer?
It has been a battle beyond what it should have been, and it has been a lot of blood sweat and tears as well as me being basically the first participant that is leading the way in self-employment which as you can imagine, being the first to go through something like that with the government, there are inherent obstacles and issues, and let’s just say it nicely- many learning curves to overcome.🤣
All that in mind, I was supposed to have received a grant for my small business in May.
Yes, May.
Five months ago BEFORE I even opened my doors.
Everything was finally in place and ready to go the day BEFORE the government shut down.
I have supplies I can’t repurchase. I have expansions to my play area and my toy store and my balloon business that are on hold until those items can be ordered.
I was holding off and waiting because my personal finances can’t sustain my business.
And so now, I don’t know how far behind I’m going to be and I’m going to have to figure out how to span the gap between needing the things that I need and waiting for the government to be back online and be able to get those things to my business.
That doesn’t mean I’m going to shut down. I can’t. I am a single mom with 3 amazing and growing boys to support.
That doesn’t mean my services or what I can offer are going to change. They won’t.
But it is another thing to manage. And it adds a level of complexity and difficulty to my day-to-day operations.
So if you’re lucky enough to not be impacted by the government shut down, you’re lucky.
But yes, it does have significant impact even in the small town of Dell Rapids, South Dakota in a small veteran owned business.
I won’t get political. I will just say, let’s hope things get figured out for all of us, and before the impact is greater.
