May is National Water Safety Month, a time to remind families that drowning is preventable, yet it remains one of the leading causes of death for young children and people under 30.

Drowning rarely looks the way it does in the movies. Most people expect splashing or yelling, but drowning is often silent and can happen in less than a minute, even in just a few inches of water.

Bystanders are often the first line of defense. Research shows drowning victims are most often rescued by people nearby, not trained professionals, simply because they are closest to the incident. More than 60% of bystander rescues happen before help arrives.

“Everyone near water plays a role in keeping people safe,” said Wendy Vara, of the American Red Cross New Jersey Region. “Whether it’s a child, a friend or a stranger, you may be the only person in a position to recognize distress and respond.”

The American Red Cross urges families to stay actively engaged around water. Don’t just swim - watch.

In 2025, the State unveiled the Liberty State Park Master Plan, which directs further improvements to the park over the next 10 years and beyond. Several habitat areas previously fenced off due to contamination are undergoing restoration to freshwater wetlands, forest, and recreational areas.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Liberty State Park will mark its 50th anniversary next month as a bountiful resource in the state.

Burlington County Animal Alliance's Adoptable Pet of the Week: Bandit 💙🐾 This adorable little guy is just 1.5 years old and weighs about 20 pounds, with the cutest ears you’ve ever seen! Bandit is likely a rat terrier mix and the perfect blend of curious explorer, playful pup, and loving cuddlebug.

Bandit absolutely lives for snuggles—he’s a true “in-your-face” kind of dog who loves to be touching you or curled up in your lap whenever possible. He’ll happily give endless kisses and soak up all the affection you can offer. Once he’s comfortable, his fun personality really shines! He gets the zoomies, loves to play, and brings such a joyful, goofy energy to the home.

He has a lot of playful energy and thrives around other dogs who want to interact and play with him. Because of this, Bandit would do best in a home with another playful dog to match his energy and help him feel confident. He can sometimes be a little mouthy during play, so continued guidance will help him channel that excitement.

Bandit must have a fenced-in yard, as he enjoys being outside and it gives him the space he needs to safely explore while continuing to build confidence. He gets panicked on leash. His foster is working with him and he is learning to follow the other dogs on walks, but he is truly happier in a fenced area.

He’s currently in a foster home with other dogs and does great—he really blossoms when he has canine companions to engage with. He’s also good with cats (though he can be a little playful with them) and is fully housebroken. He is crate trained as well.

Bandit can be a little nervous at first, especially with new people, quick movements, or loud noises. Once he warms up, he is incredibly sweet, affectionate, and devoted. He is truly a “shadow dog” who loves following his person around—he just wants to be close to you. Apply to meet him at bcaaofnj.org 🐾💙

New Jersey American Water's drinking water meets or surpasses both state and federal water-quality standards for all regulated substances, including lead, according to the company's 2026 water quality report.

New Jersey American - a subsidiary of American Water - is the largest regulated water utility in the state, with about 875 dedicated employees who provide affordable water and wastewater services to approximately 3 million people.

The 2026 annual water quality report, also referred to as a "consumer confidence report," determined the quality of water provided by the utility by using data collected from water-quality testing in its local systems between January and December of last year.

The report compares the compounds detected in the treated drinking water to compliance standards established by both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
