One way to develop both is to read more. Read the classics. Read popular fiction. Read essays and poetry. And read sales pages, landing pages and emails.

A quick tip for building your business: When you land a client and, after the first project or two, realize it's a really good fit, dig into all the ways you can help them reach their goals.

Spend some time on their website. Sign up for their email list. Follow them on social media. See if they have a podcast or a YouTube channel. Watch for their paid advertisements. What does their sales funnel look like? Do they have a customer-retention strategy?

Make a list of possible ways you might help them make their existing channels work even better.

That way, whenever you complete one project, you'll always have a valuable idea to pitch for the next.

When you're sending out pitches to prospects, you have the choice to send out a lot of pitches that aren't very customized. Or you can send fewer pitches, but spend more time on each one.

If you're pitching to prospects who already know you, go with the second option every time.

When you're running a writing business - especially in the early days - it can feel like there are so many things to do to make your business the best it can be, to bring in clients, to earn the income you want, and to feel like you're a ::professional::.

It can be overwhelming and discouraging at times. But there are some tricks you can use to help you make steady progress.

One is to periodically write down everything you're thinking about, considering doing, dreaming about, worried about... all of it. Just getting it out of your head and onto a sheet of paper can help you relax and focus on doing just one thing at a time. Because you won't be trying to keep track... you'll have captured the ideas. This brain dump gives you the mental space to stop ruminating and to start doing.

When you pitch a project idea to a company, it can help if you zero in on a blindspot... an opportunity that's obvious to you, but that they've missed because they're too close to their own business.

For example, if you sign up for their email list and don't receive a welcome message, they might not realize that welcome messages get read more than any other type of message. But you can reach out to them and say, "I noticed you didn't send a welcome message..." and then see where that conversation takes you.
