What a phenomenal Friday (was it Friday?) at Las Rosas
A rare opportunity to witness COMMUNION from Chile, alongside War Metal beasts Abysmal Lord and ascendant local Black Metal act, Undercrypt.

Undercrypt began the proceedings with a style of synth-tinged riffy Black Metal that crossed the Atlantic in the early 90s and never left our hearts. Building off EP release “Called to the Crypt,” bonus points for the bespectacled bass man busting out the CLAYMORE mid set and LARPing the frick out of us.

Abysmal Lord, comprised of local hero Rick Smith who organized this festive Friday, never fail to delight. The trio sharing two members with Caveman Cult is one of the most photogenic bands in the world, with Grant Tom in particular shining on screen as much as on the strings.

Lastly, COMMUNION, a Chilean Black Metal act took the stage and blew us all away. You know sh*t’s about to get real when the drummer walks on stage in sunglasses. While still distinctly fitting in that War Metal category, their breathable passages with a more traditional Black Metal sound made them the perfect capstone to top off the blended slate of extreme Blackened Metal that carried us into a lovely weekend. LIVE REPORT! 09/28 Las Rosas, Miami
A Neapolitan buffet of Extreme Metal carried us into a tiresome Monday commute, yet always worth the endeavor.

Starting off the night, CRIMINALLY INSANE, a name apt to describe my current mental state, finally took to the stage after early progress was stymied by the SCAMDEMIC (emphasis on SCAM). Riffs were catchy, with some surprisingly apt guitar leads, solid bass tone and finger work, all supported by the robust drumming from scene vet and Que Asko battery - Jon Gonz. After years in the incubator, CRIMINALLY INSANE are ready to build on this performance and continue to grow with this steady quartet.

Next, UNDERCRYPT, led by conventionally handsome multi-instrumentalist, Nick Cody, gave us a fantastic set of riffy Black Metal, echoing the second wave with layers of keyboards over buzzsaw riffs, with some bouncier portions even harkening to the early days with the likes of Celtic Frost. UNDERCRYPT are one of the only pure Black Metal bands in South Florida, a welcome representative of SoFla, with so many of the best BM played between Tampa & Orlando.

Finally, CAVEMAN CULT - the ultimate in uncompromising brutality. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 10 years since their introduction on that chilly December night at the Kreepy Tiki. With about a year under their belts featuring frontman, Eddie Ortiz, the band appear to be firing on all cylinders, delivering a devastating sonic attack that was at once expected, but the audience is never fully prepared for. What a way to close September. Until next time!

This industry is exactly the cl*******ck expected when this entity was launched, beginning with the Calle Ocho power outage that nearly destroyed the very first opportunity, to the shows that were cancelled before anyone heard they were coming, Classic Steel was borne out of a desire to make war upon the enemies of Metal, and to provide a new standard for those who make the music that bring us together.

There are too many to list, but THANK YOU to every promoter, booking agent, venue, musician, and individual who gave Classic Steel the chance to walk the walk, and to all who believed in the mission. We are just getting started! YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!

Very few of us have the money we wish we had to support the artists we love. It’s up to us to be smart, not just with how we spend our money, but who we spend it on. This graphic was borne from the OUTRAGE at TICKETMASTER charging $14 to do absolutely nothing, while we expect $25 to fund an entire tour.. In the days to come, expect more helpful graphics, insights, and ideas on how to work together as a scene and keep the little we have in the hands of those who deserve it the most.
