If you’ve been a follower of this page for more than a few days you will recognize the name Kris Russ. Even if he’s not from Baton Rouge directly, he is more or less a local, and we’ve talked about him before, run a song or two as our 🅃🅁🄰🄲🄺 🄾🄵 🅃🄷🄴 🅆🄴🄴🄺, and basically marked time waiting for him to get a show somewhere close enough for us to cover. When I saw the flyer for this show, I almost did a backflip. In a sound he describes as “alt indie core”, there is just something about his music I don’t hear everyday. With a heavy EMO influence throughout this show, by all the bands, he added another layer I wasn’t expecting.

I mentioned we’ve covered his music before, and his voice had me excited to see his show. A good vocalist on everything he’s recorded, I wanted to see if he could do it live. Studio magic is a real thing, and I’ve heard more than one vocalist come out sounding mid without an engineer at the k***s helping him out. Of course, without tracks, the magical façade quickly dissipates on stage and being my first show with Kris I could only hope there would be no “Wizard of Oz” reveal tonight. Well, again for those who haven’t been around, the fact that I am writing this is all the confirmation you need to know that he does in fact live up to the hype. I don’t do negative pieces, so if he wasn’t just as good live I would simply move on, but make no mistake, this kid has some real pipes!!

I could just say he has a good voice, as good live as he was recorded, but this boy was downright impressive. His highs are CRAZY, and he can hold them indefinitely!! OK, maybe not indefinitely, but more than once I stepped back and simply marveled. Voice aside for a sec, he also commands the stage like a seasoned veteran, plays the guitar, and by the end of the show had the crowd eating out of his hand. From the rail to the riser, to writhing on the stage floor, if you take your eyes off him, you are likely to miss something. Hickman was on the kit tonight, a guy I’ve shot before, and he is the consummate professional on drums. Hickman the stickman. It was my first time working with Alexander though, self professed ax for hire, I found myself fixated on his Smurf guitar strap for some reason. Jose on the bass had the dark side of the stage, and just kind of chilled and busted it out on the fat strings. All in all, it really was a cool set.

Lighting at The Basin can be suspect to say the least. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s not. It really depends on the band’s request and what else Paul has going on. He does sound and lights, and sound will always take precedence. I try not to complain and use it as a challenge to improve; lord knows I need to improve. Tonight, the weather also had the crowd a little sparce, but after all was said and done, I still drove home with a smile. I will never understand the Baton Rouge rock fans. There were no other shows in town tonight, the rain was already letting up as we drove in, so there was no excuse not to get out for these kids. I’ve heard more than one complaint this year about lack of big shows, and as I sit here in August, I’ve worked ZERO shows at The Rivercenter this year and honestly can’t say I’m surprised. If I were a promoter in this area, seeing the turnout for the smaller rock shows, I wouldn’t gamble my money on an audience to support a larger act. If you think that doesn’t matter, you’re wrong. Being in the room with the decision makers when they’re discussing routing for the Disturbed and Breaking Benjamin level acts, they are going to choose Biloxi or New Orleans 99 times out of 100 because of that reason alone. We only have ourselves to blame.

Another positive tonight was meeting a young up and coming photographer, Rian. I’ve seen her pics, we cover some of the same bands, and I’ve already seen some of her grabs from this night and will just say the girl is GOOD! I mentioned the lighting above, she made the most of it. If you get a chance, check her out on some of these band’s socials. I know she has me on my tip toes right now. lol

Bottom line, check out Kris’ music. He has some hard rock tunes, some that sound grungy to me, the EMO stuff is in there, he really does have something for everyone. He has a new song coming soon and a few more shows in the area, so get out there, find him on a stage, and let me know what you think.

Longtime GN’R member Dizzy F'n Reed has just dropped his brand-new single, “Earn It 2 Burn It.” I normally try to stay away from these legacy guys who I feel mostly just turn out burnout music for burnouts, but this single off his upcoming album Rock ‘N’ Roll Chose Me, is pretty good.

Dizzy shares, "The song is about working our asses off and never actually seeing any money at all." A theme I think many of us can relate to, I wanted to get it up in front of y’all and see what you thought.

While we wait to see if there will be any shows announced, or if we will get a copy of the full record to write about, y’all check it out here. It will also be in our Spotify playlist by the time you read this.

I first met Darren at a Magnolia Bayou festival one weekend a few years back in North Alabama. A cool dude, we were hanging outa at a friends house when he walked in. Everyone knew him but me, that didn’t last long. Friendly guy, he had come down from Canada to enjoy the weekend with everyone. I knew he played guitar in Wayward Saints, and although I didn’t know much about the band, based off his musical tastes alone, I told him if they ever got an album together make sure I got a copy to write about. I say it that way because the only real rule I have about the records I cover here is that I have to like the music. There are tons of bands out there, tons of new music, and I don’t have the time to spend on stuff I don’t like. I have never felt the need to do hit pieces. Largely click bait, there are already way too many people doing them, so even if I don’t always write about what’s popular, I find it more enjoyable this way. I said all that simply to say a CD arrived a couple weeks ago from Canada, and before I had even gotten all the way through it once, I knew I would be here hitting the keys before all was said and done.

With a sound I would describe as 70s influenced 90s style rock, this record reminds me of bands I liked back in the day like Smashed Gladys and Faster Pussycat. Most of that comes from Lindsay’s voice and the way she growls out her vocals. My affinity for her delivery is 90% of the reason all my standout tracks are the upbeat, faster paced songs. 𝙄𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙, for example, kind of starts off with a Boston-esk acoustic type guitar but quickly drops the hammer and commences to getting loud real quick. Once active it reminds me a lot of the old Primal Scream cover of “Get Your Rocks Off.” It just has that same energy to it IMO. Talking to Darren, he told me it was the first song they ever jammed and completed as a band in 2019. As it sits, it is my favorite song on the record. Another fav for me is 𝙋𝙖𝙮 𝙉𝙤 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙. Also upbeat, I like the guitar on this one especially. 𝙂𝙤𝙩 𝙏𝙤 𝙂𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙄𝙣 is on my list as well, and this is the one that gives me the Smashed Gladys feel. It’s jumpy, it’s groovy, its just fun.

I go back and forth on 𝙁𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙨 𝙊𝙛 𝙍𝙚𝙙. A cool enough tune, but the slower side of the band comes through at times, and as I just pointed out, I prefer them jumpin and skipping. It’s one of Darren’s favorite tracks, him calling it the best song he’s ever recorded, “musically.” That being said, the title track, 𝙎𝙪𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙫𝙤𝙧 is the slowest tune on the record, and as such, is probably my least favorite song. Not bad by any means, but when it gets slow this music takes a decidedly country turn. It is an introspective tune, carrying a lot of personal meeting to them as they penned it, but I want my Wayward Saints pumping out rock’n’roll, so it was the one song I left off my list.

There you have it, the Wayward Saints new record according to me. A new band from atop the border with a sound that sways freely from 70s arena to 90s hair depending on the track at hand. Is it a perfect 5 out of 5 horns? Maybe not, but it’s pretty close, especially considering the age of this band and the fact that it’s their first attempt. The sonics on the record are superb, the guitars inspire, and rhythm section solid, but make no mistake about it, this band revolves around the vocals of Lindsay Coleman. All that paired with the three or four (depending on my mood) standout tracks all make me pretty sure I could defend a 4.5 horns, so that is where I will stop and make my stand today. We put up a couple tracks over the weekend down below, and added several to our Spotify playlist, so get these cats in your earholes and let me know where I am going wrong.

Wanted to give a quick shoutout to 2/4 Flinchin'. Caught them a couple weeks back at The Basin Music Hall supporting Okay Boomhauer, and although I wasn't completely set up when they hit the stage, I took notice. A lot to unpack here with no less than 9 guys on stage at once, but Byron was the center of attention.
The first of all three bands tonight, they played practically in the dark, doing the music of Tony Hawk Sound Track, and it was all I could do to keep up. As mentioned, a crowded stage, so Byron was quick to get down in front, where it was even darker, and interact with the crowd. The dude is a natural showman, he commands everyone's attention when he has a mic in his hand, and from start to finish he was cooking next level.
Not a lot of shots here, even fewer good ones, but I couldn't let the event go by without at least mentioning their name. If you see it on a show bill somewhere near you, stick your face in the door, it might just be worth your time! Haven't had the chance to see them again yet, but hopefully we cross paths again sometime soon. Check em' out and let me know what you think.
