Follow Up…..
Lake Grapevine- It's been one year since 18-year-old Cadet Candidate Ava Moore was killed.
Moore was set to join the US Air Force Academy, when she was kayaking on Grapevine Lake over Memorial Day weekend.
She was hit and killed by a jet ski on the lake.
Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez, 21, was indicted on a charge of manslaughter. She faces up to 20 years in prison.
Authorities also charged Maikel Alexander Coello Perozo, 21, with hindering apprehension or prosecution.
ICE says the two are in the country illegally from Venezuela.
Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez, she remains in custody at the Tarrant County Corrections Center.
While a magistrate set her bond at $500,000 for the manslaughter charge shortly after her arrest, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) placed an immigration detainer (hold) on her.
This means that even if someone were to post her half-million-dollar bond, she would not be released to the public; instead, she would immediately be transferred into federal custody or remain held locally to answer to her state charges.
Maikel Alexander Coello Perozo also remains in custody under a similar immigration hold alongside his state charges (hindering apprehension and accident involving damage to a vehicle).
Trial Timeline and ETA:
There is currently no public, firm ETA for the start of her criminal trial. * Where the case stands: A Tarrant County grand jury officially indicted Gonzalez for manslaughter in August 2025, and Coello Perozo was indicted for his role in September 2025.
What to expect: Because manslaughter is a second-degree felony in Texas carrying a punishment of 2 to 20 years in prison, cases of this magnitude—especially those involving extensive multi-agency investigations (Grapevine PD, Texas Game Wardens, and Homeland Security)—frequently take well over a year to weave through pre-trial motions, evidence sharing, and docket scheduling.
Additionally, the family of the victim, Ava Moore, retained a legal team to conduct independent investigations into regional waterway safety protocols, which can sometimes parallel or impact the timeline of court proceedings.
Both suspects are currently undergoing formal federal removal (deportation) proceedings, though those typically defer to the completion of criminal prosecution so they can stand trial for the state offenses first.
