Thanks for the shoutout from Denton Haunts for Mike Cochran's "John B. Denton: The Bigger-Than-Life Story of the Fighting Parson and Texas Ranger" on Capt. Denton's 219th birthday. https://untpress.unt.edu/catalog/cochran-john-b-denton/
Happy Bithday, Capt. John B. Denton, born OTD in Tennessee on July 28, 1806!!! Denton was a Methodist minister, lawyer, soldier, and political candidate for whom both Denton County, Texas and the city of Denton, Texas, were named. He converted to Methodism soon after meeting his future wife, Mary Greenlee Stewart, who also taught him how to read and write. He later became a captain and was known for his battles against Native Americans. He died in May 1841 after the Battle of Village Creek, an attack on a Keechi village in adjacent Tarrant County.
Is he currently buried in his 3rd grave on the Denton Courthouse lawn? You’ll have to read Mike Cochran‘s definitive biography, available at Patchouli Joe's Books & Indulgences!! RIP 🪦
