Hey Dentonites! The City Council would like to hear from you about three naming applications currently under consideration. A public meeting to receive in-person input on these applications will be held on Monday, December 15 at 6PM at the Civic Center (321 E. McKinney Street). The meeting will be in the Community Room (to your left as you enter the front lobby).

City staff are also receiving public input online. The online input form is available here: https://bit.ly/48IY74e

Every so often, the City of Denton receives applications to name specific facilities or properties owned by the City. Many of these applications are from the public, seeking to honor someone by naming a facility after them. City staff may also submit applications for naming, for example, when a new piece of park land is developed and the park needs an official name.

The three applications currently under consideration are:
1. Naming the Civic Center the “Quakertown Civic Center”
2. Naming the Day Labor Site at 301 Fort Worth Drive “The Popo Gonzalez Day Labor Site”
3. Naming the Juneteenth Softball Tournament “The John Royston Juneteenth Softball Tournament”

For more information about the City’s naming policy and to view each of the submitted naming applications please visit: https://www.discussdenton.com/naming-requests

Beginning November 1, more than 3,000 Denton residents who rely on SNAP benefits will temporarily lose access to crucial food resources as the current federal government shutdown continues.

If you or someone you know needs help, visit this page for a list of local food pantries in Denton and the surrounding area: http://bit.ly/432Hxt3

Community members who wish to help their neighbors can make a monetary donation to the United Way of Denton County’s temporary Food Insecurity Relief Fund to support neighbors in need: bit.ly/49trjgv.

Eligible households are encouraged to continue applying for SNAP benefits, as the state manages applications and is not currently affected by the shutdown. Benefits are expected to be distributed retroactively once federal operations resume. To apply for benefits or book an in-person appointment with a SNAP specialist at Serve Denton, visit https://bit.ly/4hwWp8V.
