🎙️This week on I Was in That Band!, I had the pleasure of meeting with Chris Stamey.

Chris has had an incredible career as a founding member of The dB’s, a current member of Big Star, a solo artist, producer, and studio owner. We talk about all of those chapters, with a special focus on his new album, Modernism, where he revisits classic songs alongside fresh takes on some of his own material.

I’ve been a fan of Chris’s music for a long time, so this was one of those conversations I was really looking forward to. We dive into songwriting, recording, producing, and the creative process that’s kept him making great music for decades.

New episode alert! 🎙️

This week on I WAS IN THAT BAND!, I sit down with my old friend Danny Balis. You may know him from his years in Dallas radio, but at heart Danny has always been a musician.

We talk about his current projects, Sir Daniel Esquire and Silver Skylarks, his love for the Denton music scene, growing up in West Texas, and what keeps him creating after all these years.

As always, there are plenty of laughs, stories, and reflections from a life spent making music with friends.

🎙️ New podcast episode up now!

This week on I Was In That Band!, I catch up with old friend Don Cento. We talk about our shared experiences in the DFW music scene, following your muse instead of expectations, and the winding path that has led Don from Shibboleth and Chomsky to his latest project, Cento Threeo.

Cento Threeo’s debut album, Halfway to Mellowtown, which comes out June 19.

Always fun talking with someone who’s never been afraid to make the music he wants to make.

New episode of I WAS IN THAT BAND! out now featuring legendary music writer Jimmy McDonough.

This one was a really big deal for me personally, because I’ve admired Jimmy’s work for years. I was first introduced to his writing through SHAKEY, his immersive and wildly entertaining Neil Young biography that completely pulled me into his world as a writer. Since then he’s written incredible books on Al Green, Tammy Wynette, and most recently the long-awaited Gary Stewart biography called I Am From The H***y Tonks — a project nearly 40 years in the making.

Jimmy and I had a great conversation about Gary Stewart, Neil Young, Hi Records, bootlegs, producers, record collecting, music obsession, biography writing, and the disappearing art of deep research and long-form storytelling. I was completely thrilled he took the time to chat with me.

I hope y’all enjoy listening to this one as much as I enjoyed getting to talk with one of my absolute favorite authors.

🎙️New episode of I WAS IN THAT BAND! out now.

This week, I catch up with old friend Nathan Brown — aka Browningham.

We talk about Nathan’s musical beginnings, taking Browningham on the road for years, and eventually settling back down in Fort Worth. Along the way, we dive into his passionate (and sometimes unpopular) music opinions, DIY touring life, underground music culture, and the experiences that shaped his unique perspective.

This episode is also a first for the podcast — my first ever remote interview recorded remotely!

🎙️ NEW EPISODE — I Was In That Band

This week I sit down with Reggie Rueffer.

Reggie first made his mark with Spot, whose hit song pushed them onto the national stage. From there, he took things even further, landing on some of the biggest stages in country music playing fiddle for legend Charley Pride.

We get into the Spot days, life on the road, what it takes to make that jump to the next level, and how he’s carved out a career as a truly eclectic multi-instrumentalist.

Eric Pulido (Midlake, EB The Younger, Banquet)

This week on I WAS IN THAT BAND, I sit down with Eric Pulido — known for his work with Midlake, as well as his solo project EB The Younger and the creative collective Banquet.

We talk about what it really means to stay creative over the long haul — building community, collaborating with friends, and continuing to push forward even when the path isn’t clear. Eric also shares insight into his work offstage with Norman Roscoe, his Denton-based screen printing shop that’s become a hub for local artists and ideas.

It’s a conversation about longevity, independence, and doing the work because you believe in it — not because it’s easy.
