🎙️ New episode out now!

This week on I WAS IN THAT BAND!, I sit down with one of my oldest friends, Jeff Gruber. Jeff has been a constant in my musical life and we talk about the various projects he’s been a part of through the years. I find out how he got started on writing a performing, how his earliest bands came together, and what he’s up to now. We talk about how both of our paths have led us to performing Grateful Dead music and how his band Bandolero will be appearing alongside mine at Dallas Dead Summit this Saturday, August 15 at the Longhorn Ballroom.

🎙️ New episode out now!

This week my guest is Bob Bert. I had a wonderful time chatting with Bob about drums, art, and life. We spend a lot of time talking about his years with Sonic Youth and especially P***y Galore, but Bob’s career stretches far beyond those legendary bands.

We also dive into his new solo album, Beach Bongo Bloodbath, and what inspired him to finally make a record under his own name after all these years.

I really enjoyed this conversation and hearing Bob’s stories about New York’s underground music scene in the late ’70s and early ‘80s. I think you’re going to enjoy this one as much as I did.

🎙️ NEW EPISODE OUT NOW!

This week on I Was in That Band!, I’m joined by my drummer buddy Kris “Tugboat” Killingsworth.

We talk about his journey from school band to the University of North Texas, his years with Thrift Store Cowboys, working alongside Amanda Shires, his passion for recording engineering, and his recent move back to DFW to forge his own path as a freelance musician and engineer.

Kris is actually back out on the road with Thrift Store Cowboys this week, and when he’s not touring, you’ll usually find him making records at his home studio, The Dark Side of the Moon Base.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to build a career as a working musician—on stage and behind the scenes—you’ll enjoy this one.

🎙️This week on I Was in That Band!, I had the pleasure of meeting with Chris Stamey.

Chris has had an incredible career as a founding member of The dB’s, a current member of Big Star, a solo artist, producer, and studio owner. We talk about all of those chapters, with a special focus on his new album, Modernism, where he revisits classic songs alongside fresh takes on some of his own material.

I’ve been a fan of Chris’s music for a long time, so this was one of those conversations I was really looking forward to. We dive into songwriting, recording, producing, and the creative process that’s kept him making great music for decades.

🎙️ New podcast episode up now!

This week on I Was In That Band!, I catch up with old friend Don Cento. We talk about our shared experiences in the DFW music scene, following your muse instead of expectations, and the winding path that has led Don from Shibboleth and Chomsky to his latest project, Cento Threeo.

Cento Threeo’s debut album, Halfway to Mellowtown, which comes out June 19.

Always fun talking with someone who’s never been afraid to make the music he wants to make.

New episode of I WAS IN THAT BAND! out now featuring legendary music writer Jimmy McDonough.

This one was a really big deal for me personally, because I’ve admired Jimmy’s work for years. I was first introduced to his writing through SHAKEY, his immersive and wildly entertaining Neil Young biography that completely pulled me into his world as a writer. Since then he’s written incredible books on Al Green, Tammy Wynette, and most recently the long-awaited Gary Stewart biography called I Am From The H***y Tonks — a project nearly 40 years in the making.

Jimmy and I had a great conversation about Gary Stewart, Neil Young, Hi Records, bootlegs, producers, record collecting, music obsession, biography writing, and the disappearing art of deep research and long-form storytelling. I was completely thrilled he took the time to chat with me.

I hope y’all enjoy listening to this one as much as I enjoyed getting to talk with one of my absolute favorite authors.
