✈️ Trump Tightens Flight Rules on Mexico – Major Travel Impact Ahead? 🇲🇽🇺🇸
Big changes are coming for anyone flying between the U.S. and Mexico.
🛑 The Trump administration just imposed new restrictions on all Mexican airlines — including cargo and charter flights. From now on, every flight must be pre-approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation before takeoff.
Why? Trump officials say Mexico’s decision to shift most international flights from Mexico City’s main airport (AICM) to the new Felipe Ángeles Airport violates a key bilateral agreement.
But it doesn’t stop there.
👉 The U.S. is also threatening to cancel the long-standing Delta–Aeroméxico alliance, which allows both airlines to share routes, codes, and operations between the two countries.
🔍 What’s at stake?
Over 40 million passengers traveled between the U.S. and Mexico last year.
Losing the Delta–Aeroméxico deal could mean fewer flights, higher fares, and over 200,000 fewer travelers annually.
Nearly $800 million USD in benefits could vanish, along with thousands of tourism-related jobs.
🧨 This move is part of a broader effort to “rebalance” air travel rights, but critics say it could hurt more than help, especially for families, travelers, and businesses on both sides of the border.
So far, the Mexican government hasn’t issued a formal response.
📆 A final decision on the airline alliance could come this October — unless a new agreement is reached.
💬 What do you think? Smart move to protect U.S. interests or a risky move that could hurt travelers and businesses?
