Sometimes the smallest words can quietly create distance between your readers and your story.

Words like noticed, realized, wondered, thought, saw, and felt often slip into our writing without attracting much attention. But use them too often, and readers stop experiencing the story alongside the character. Instead, they’re watching the character experience it.

That little bit of distance can weaken an otherwise powerful scene.

In my latest Polished Sentences article, How Thinking Words Weaken Your Writing, I look at how to spot these words, when to remove them, and how to bring readers closer to the action.

Writers, I have a challenge for you: search your manuscript for the word "just."

You might be surprised by what you find. Just is one of those sneaky little crutch words that slips into dialogue, narration, and description so easily that we eventually stop seeing it. Then suddenly it’s everywhere. The good news? Most of the time, you can delete it without changing the meaning of the sentence at all.

In the latest Polished Sentences article, I look at why writers rely on just so much, when it weakens a sentence, and when it actually deserves to stay.

Then search your manuscript for just. You may have some deleting to do.

Worried your business book will sound like one long sales pitch?

That fear can actually create the opposite problem. Some business owners work so hard to avoid selling that they never mention their business, services, or expertise at all. Your first job as a business author is to help your reader. Give them useful information. Show them how to solve problems. Offer advice they can put to work right away. Do that consistently, and something important happens: readers begin to trust you.

And when readers trust your expertise, you don’t have to constantly sell your services. They’ll want to know how else you can help them.

A business book shouldn't be the end of the conversation. It should be the beginning of a relationship.

Too many business owners write a great book, publish it, and leave readers wondering, "Now what?" No invitation. No next step. No connection back to the business.

Your book should educate, build trust, and naturally guide readers toward working with you if they want to go further.

If your book isn't helping your business grow, it may be missing one simple but powerful ingredient.

Writing may be a solitary activity, but becoming a better writer doesn't have to be.

A good critique group can help you spot problems you can't see yourself, keep you accountable, and encourage you to keep writing when motivation fades.

And if getting to an in-person group isn't realistic? Online critique groups offer many of the same benefits—honest feedback, supportive fellow writers, and a stronger manuscript—all without leaving home.

Sometimes your favorite writing partner is a comfy couch... and a cat insisting on supervising your keyboard. 🐈

Strong writing isn't built one sentence at a time. It's built one paragraph at a time.

A paragraph should do more than collect related thoughts. It should move the story, reveal character, build tension, provide important information, or prepare the reader for what's next.

If you're not sure whether a paragraph is pulling its weight, ask yourself four simple questions. The answers can quickly reveal why a scene feels flat—and how to make it stronger.

Readers don't learn by being told. They learn by seeing.

One of the biggest mistakes in business books is explaining an idea without showing how it works in the real world. Strong examples help readers connect the dots, build confidence, and think, "I can actually do this."

If you want your business book to educate, inspire, and create lasting value, better examples are one of the simplest ways to make it happen.

Ever read a paragraph that felt... repetitive, even though the words weren't? The problem might not be your word choice. It might be your sentence structure.

When every sentence is built the same way, your writing develops a predictable rhythm. Readers may not know why the paragraph feels flat, but they'll feel it just the same. Strong ideas deserve writing that keeps the reader engaged from the first sentence to the last.

A little variety in sentence length and structure can make your prose flow more naturally—and keep readers turning the page.

Have you ever finished reading a chapter and thought... **"What was the point?"**
If your readers are asking themselves that question, they'll probably stop reading.

Every chapter in a business book should deliver one clear takeaway. Yes, you can include stories, examples, and personal experiences—but they should all support the same central idea. When readers finish a chapter, they should be able to summarize its main point in a sentence or two.

A focused chapter is easier to read, easier to remember, and far more likely to inspire action.
