I’ve always loved the question “where ya people from?”. It always felt like connecting the dots of Black familiarity and history. My Mom is from Chicago but her people are from State Line, Mississippi.

My work is centered around shifting the narrative of the possibilities of Black communal experience and reminding us is who we are in relation to the outdoors.

The moment I started contemplating adventuring the American South, all the other contemplations followed. Among what I learned in many conversations with our folks who grew up in the south, is that they had a foundational connection to the outdoors from childhood. It just looked different from how we consider outdoor recreation.

Where ya people from?

Had you ever thought about the Great Black Migration and it's impact on how we get outside?

Black folks thriving is a necessary part of the Black lives matter conversation. This is Black history. As we support Black businesses we bridge gaps like the wealth gap and land or home ownership gap. As more Black folks begin to find themselves in the American outdoors or even wanting to bring parts of it into their everyday lives, I want to remind everyone to look out for Black owned businesses to shop with and support.

Everywhere I travel to on my adventures throughout the US, I Google “Black owned coffee shop”. I love coffee, I usually need somewhere I can post up and work for a few hours along my journey, and it shows me deeper insight into that area’s Black community. It’s amazing the places I’ve found them. There was one right near the Mexicali (Mexico California border) that was so charming and ran by a young Black woman.

Support Black businesses and look for them in industries you may not think you’ll find us.

The picture of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Coretta Scott King with the jungle behind is in Jamaica where he had said he never felt more free.
I won't hold you with any long stories today but I'll ask you, where do you go to feel free? Whether another country, your favorite spot in your house, or your favorite place in nature. How have your rights been impacted or stressed regarding? You may be unaware but the interconnection and intersection of life is wildly intertwined.
Before moving to New Orleans, I knew the state of the environment would upset me. Now that I'm here to witness the environmental injustices that deeply impact Black areas and towns perpetuated by city, state, federal I'm absolutely pi**ed.

"It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. … We aren’t going to have peace on Earth until we recognize this basic fact of the interrelated structure of all reality" Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

His work of the Civil Rights act and Voting Rights act made it possible for the Clean Air act and Clean Water act to be passed. Isn't that wild to think that although we see it not being upheld in places like Flint, a whole law has to be passed to care for ALL American citizens.

What's happening to is crazy but the Black community is not surprised. We are exhausted and angry. Please read through this and share it. Go to their profile and watch the videos. I have the links to their GoFundMe and petition in my bio link.

Please show up and show out this week if you can. Again, Courtney/C.W. has court on Tuesday the 14th at 2pm. Nicole has court on the 16th at 8:30am. Both at the Colorado Springs courthouse. The protest will be at the Denver Capitol 9am to 1pm. I think this week is going to truly matter.

has provided a lot of ongoing information and has a network news video on their page giving some detailed information I hadn't fully known.

Black lives matter. Black Farmers matter.

I will literally be between 2 work trips this week but I've inquired about coming at the beginning of March to see what I can do. Send this to anyone you know in Colorado. Share it to get the word out.

As we honor the beloved Dr. King today, I want to remind my Black community that no matter where you are, you not only belong but are supposed to be there. Whether it be literally a physical place or a figurative place like a status or position in life. The system has been rigged against us but only as long as we allow it to condition us. The narrative was previously a barrier but let it be a reminder that our ancestors before us who did the things that Black people “don’t do” are our guides.

We Been Out Here

Yes, Dr. King was turned away, but he went. This year, just go, do, try the thing that you are curious about. Even if it doesn’t go as expected, I promise you will gain something.

How to prepare to do one of my favorite things in this lifetime so far.... Vibe out in a hammock surrounded by nature. I am pro at making excuses if it isn't perfect which this video isn't but I'm happy with it and I think it's enough beginner level info.

Extra questions? Lemme know!
I'll add links to hammocks in my bio.

I used to not do something unless I could make it as perfect as I imagined it, but then I never got anything done. The way that one thing went wrong after another with my intended intro episode, I accept the episode that I was able to upload. It's not a real episode but it's something for you to find and subscribe to. So please go do that.

There will also be videos of interviews and my adventures in YouTube. You can find these all at my bio link. Please subscribe for the content to come.

🗣PSA: We Been Out Here podcast will launch 1/11/22 and will be stories and interviews of the Black folks who have been out here don't the things before COVID made it cool.

Why? To show the community that Black folks DO in fact adventure and that WE BEEN OUT HERE!!

I am grateful for this community.

There are so many thoughts and feelings about going duck hunting this weekend racing through my mind. To the top comes thrill and gratitude.

A couple weeks ago I reached out to asking if he had any hunting trips coming up and if I could join. We've had a few conversations about hunting because for health reason, I am a vegetarian who has a hard time with the idea of killing an animal "just because".

But hunting isn't "just because". Not in the way he immerses himself into the outdoors. When he speaks of it, there's a consistent tone of joy, awareness, and gratitude as he tells me stories of his family's history of it and how hunting is conservation work. In one conversation with him, I am educated in a way I need to step back and process the depths of what I had just learned.

This weekend I'll be connecting with the outdoors in ways that are rich in Black history but many have become disconnected from as it grew into recreation. Grateful is an understatement.

I grew up in Alaska but never in my lifetime did I think I'd be going to the Arctic Circle, let alone with a group of Black and brown folks. I really feel speechless and excited about adventuring through such an exclusive place but also do incredibly honored to witness even a morsel of what life is like for the Gwich'in people whose land we will be on. will be leading us and I couldn't feel safer or in better hands.

What do you think of when you think of Alaska? Would you ever go to Alaska to experience is wilderness?

I plan to speak more candidly on the blatant and obvious racism towards the Indigenous Alaskans I grew up around.

I'll be hanging out at home in Anchorage afterwards to adventure and hang out with friends and family. If you're in Alaska and wanna hang, give me a shout!!
