The Doom Patrol drops the needle: Robotman’s clanking like a busted jukebox while Tyler Childers sings about Eatin’ Big Time, voice rough as gravel washed in bourbon. Crazy Jane snorts, says it’s about sin and grease and dying slow with a smile, thirty-two personalities tapping greasy spoons in her head. Negative Man hums along, the band in his chest sputtering sparks like a Pentecostal revival held inside a jet engine. Flex Mentallo flexes his biceps and somehow the pedal steel bends lower, weirder, cosmic—like the Grand Ole Opry collapsing into a black hole of heartache and cornbread. Even Danny the Street pipes up in neon Morse code: this here’s the sound of Appalachian apocalypse served with gravy. It’s country, sure, but country gone feral, a hymn for mutants chewing deep-fried existential dread, sweet tea harmonies chasing doom through the Kentucky holler night.

Bruce Loose, singer and co-founder of San Francisco band Flipper, has died. Flipper’s slow, abrasive sound shaped the West Coast underground and influenced bands from the Melvins to Nirvana. Loose shared vocals with Will Shatter until Shatter’s death in 1987, after which Loose carried the band through multiple reformations.

Flipper played the Eagle’s Lodge in Thornton in the 1980s, a set remembered for chaos more than musicianship. In 2012, Loose brought the band to Wax Trax Records and the Lion’s Lair in Denver, older but still confrontational.

Our Story

Wax Trax is a brick & mortar record store that has been in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood for over 41 years. Founded in 1975 by Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher, it was sold to Dave Stidman and Duane Davis (pictured at right) in 1978, and Jim and Dannie moved to Chicago to launch the Wax Trax! Record Label. Look for the “!” to tell the two apart.

Since then, Wax Trax has specialized in bringing the best in independent music to Colorado. In the 70s that meant being one of the only stores in Denver importing Punk and New Wave from England. In the 80s and 90s that search for the latest and greatest expanded, eventually establishing one of the widest selections in the city and one of the centers of the local music scene.

“Wax Trax distinguished itself as the center of the universe for a new kind of fan, obsessed with whatever was new and fashion-forward, and the people they hired fit the niche and met that public with a famous attitude,” -- Westword (Nov. 2018)
