There was a time that I could tie a dozen knots with my eyes closed. That dozen has dwindled to two; the shoelace and the clove hitch. The others I can still tie, but have to open my eyes. I am not proud of this fact, but I'm not tied up in knots about it either.

The Anatomy of a Standard Bowline

Core (nub)

Nipping loop

(a ellosed helical structure) This photo shows a Bowline based on a right-hared helical nipping loop.

Note: A helix can be right-handed or left-handed, not as rotating clockwise or counter-clockwise. Handedness for chirality) is a property of the helix, not of the perspective. A riglet-handed helix cannot he turned or flipped to look like a left-handed one undess it is viewed in a mirror, and vice versa,

Returning Eye-leg (ends at the point where it enters the nipping loop)

(begins from exit point of the nipping loop to the end)

Tail end

Standing part ('SPart)

Collar

Note: The collar is a specific region of the bight structure. It is where the bight performs a U turn around the SPart. The collar has 2 legs

2

Legs of the Collar:

1) entry leg

2) exit leg

Crossing point

(This also marks the point where the SPart enters and becomes the nipping loop)

Region of highest stress & strain

Ongoing Eye-leg (begins where it emerges from the nipping loop)

🪢 ANATOMY OF A BOWLINE (Regular view)
A simple knot with life-saving power.

The bowline is one of the most important knots used in rescue, climbing, sailing, and firefighting. It creates a fixed loop that is strong, secure, and easy to untie—even after being under heavy load.

Parts of the Bowline:

🔹 Standing Part (SPart):
The part of the rope that carries the weight or tension.
🔹 Collar and Bight:
The curved section that wraps around the standing part to form the knot’s shape.
🔹 Nipping Turn:
The loop that holds the tail in place. It’s what keeps the knot from coming undone.
🔹 Crossing Point:
Where rope segments overlap—helps the knot tighten correctly.
🔹 Tail:
The free end of the rope. Always leave enough length for safety.
🔹 Loop (Connective Eye):
The main loop used to tie around or attach to something.
🔹High-Stress Area:
The part of the knot that takes the most force. Check this area before use.

***The bowline is listed as #1010 in The Ashley Book of Knots—a worldwide knot reference.
This breakdown is inspired by the analysis of Mark Gommers (2013).
