What does it take to maintain a fourteener? Try altitude, teamwork, and a whole lot of grit. 🏔️

Crews from the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps and other CYCA partners spend days on peaks like Quandary and Elbert building stairs, hauling logs, and keeping trails safe for the 300,000+ hikers who visit each year. 🚶‍♂️

But their impact goes beyond trails — these programs give young people hands-on experience in conservation, leadership, and public service 💼🌿

Southeast Colorado Power Association member Judy Davis holds her copy of CCL with The Wolf Hotel owner Chris McCord in Ellinwood, Kansas. Judy says, “Ellinwood lies on the Santa Fe Trail and was settled by German immigrants in 1870.

The town has the original two square block business district where additional shops, housed below ground, include the original 1887 Tom Drakes Harness Shop, a Barber Shop, Bathhouse, and two tunnels. It was originally home to 11 saloons. The 1894 Historic Wolf Hotel is filled with magnificent antiques.”

As we think ahead to the season of shorter days and twinkling lights, we’d like to make space to appreciate the people who bring light into our lives. 🌟

Has someone helped you through a hard time with a kind word, a warm meal, or just by being there? Maybe it was a friend who made you laugh when you needed it most, a neighbor who stepped in when you were struggling, or a stranger whose simple act of kindness stuck with you. ❤️

We’d love to hear your story for our December 2025 issue. Keep it short and heartfelt — we’re looking for the everyday stories that remind us how powerful a little light can be. The deadline to share your story is September 20. To share your story, visit: https://coloradocountrylife.coop/light-in-the-dark/

From ancient Greece to the Rockies — the art of the fly has come a long way.

What began with crimson wool and rooster feathers has evolved into a world of intricate designs and inventive materials. Some vintage flies, crafted from the feathers of exotic birds, are now prized collector’s items. But here in the U.S., fly tying took a more practical turn — built on skill, creativity, and accessibility. 🎣

In the Rockies, patterns like the Copper John may not resemble any specific bug, but they’re irresistible to trout. Whether you're a seasoned angler or curious beginner, fly tying adds a whole new layer to the sport — and maybe, just maybe, it leads you to the fish of a lifetime. Love your old home but not the energy bills? Charming older homes may lack modern efficiency — but a few smart (and often invisible) upgrades can make a big difference. 🏡

Think less “new countertops,” more air sealing, insulation, and smart prep around classic features like pocket doors and attic access. Not glamorous, but your wallet (and comfort level) will thank you every month! 💡
