1SG(r) Jesse Queck came and sat down with The Vanguard Wall Podcast. Fifteen months into a deployment that was supposed to be twelve — eleven days from going home — the push came down: Wanat. If you know that name, you know what it means. Jesse was a mortarman there, dropping rounds while the outpost fought for its life. But the battle is only part of this conversation. Before Wanat, he spent his war on an outpost so high in the Afghan mountains that he looked DOWN at the backs of birds flying beneath the wire — 3,300 meters up, where his first patrol ended with him crawling back through the wire because his legs quit before his heart did. And then there's the war after the war — the one most men won't talk about on camera. Jesse came home and drank almost a fifth of liquor a day. Bought two bottles at a time so he'd never run out. His words, not mine: "I won't put the gun up to my head and pull the trigger, but I'll put that bottle up every night." Until a therapist asked him one question that shook his world — and bet him he couldn't go thirty days without a drink. That bet put him in rehab. Rehab gave him his life back. He told me he's "the most basic regular Army dude" we've ever had on this show. After six hours across the table from him, I'll tell you straight: he's not. Full episode drops Saturday morning. Long-forms and clips roll all week after. And if you're sitting where Jesse sat — bottle in hand, telling yourself it's under control — this episode was made for you. Nobody walks out of the dark alone. 🇺🇸
