On THURSDAY night, August 27-28, a nearly-total lunar eclipse will occur, bathing the moon in a reddish-brown light.
This is due to a deep partial lunar eclipse. You won't need glasses or anything special – just clear skies and cooperative weather.
All of the eclipse will be visible in the eastern U.S.; in the West, the eclipse will be ongoing around moonrise.
Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon. That blocks most of the sunlight from reaching the moon. The moon instead becomes plunged in Earth's shadow – the "umbra."
But SOME light makes it through – that which skims around the edges of Earth and passes through our atmosphere at a steep angle. Because the sunlight has to pass through a long fetch of our atmosphere, shorter wavelengths of light get "scattered" away. Only the red/orange light gets through.
(It's also why sunrises and sunsets on Earth appear red... the sun is low to the horizon and the light passes through more of our atmosphere.
During a deep partial or lunar eclipse, you're seeing the light of all of Earth's simultaneous sunrises and sunsets projected onto the moon!
The timings I've listed may look different than those published by other outlets. Truth be told, I don't think you need to waste your time looking at the unremarkable partial phases of the eclipse. (The moon won't look reddish until about 80-90 percent of it is immersed in the Earth's umbra). That's why I've outlined the window of 90% or greater coverage.
At peak, 96.2% of the moon will be in the Earth's shadow, which is enough to turn it red.
Lunar eclipses are far more commonly viewed than total solar eclipses. That's because the entire nighttime side of Earth can see them. (Total solar eclipses can be seen in only a tiny, narrow track that oftentimes is only a few dozen miles wide).
90% versus 100% also doesn't matter much for lunar eclipses like this one. For a solar eclipse, it's literally night and day.
