2026 has been crazy! I chased as much as I could get away from work this spring. I finally documented a couple tornadoes in Kansas. It took me 4 years to get over that hump. I failed on a couple big setups, which always hurt, but hopefully learned a few things to take forward for the future. Checked off quite a few firsts for me this year anyhow!

When a chase comes together like this within an hour from home, it doesn't get any better than that. It was spectacular out there today in central Iowa.

These were all taken between Ames and the Story City area.

SPC outlook for Monday-

Enhanced risk added in from Iowa up through Wisconsin. Wind and hail are the main topics at this point. I do think there will be a window for a couple tornadoes as well from 3-6pm as those initial storms fire.

The U.S. House is expected to vote this week on the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanent nationwide if it ultimately becomes law.

*IF* DST becomes permanent, these would be the latest sunrise times across the Upper Midwest in the depths of Winter.

Opposite more daylight in the evenings and not switching clocks… the dark mornings. One big issue is kids and school. Kids walking to school in darkness for several months of the school year inducing an unnecessary danger with the added darkness

Permanent Daylight Saving time was tried in the mid-70s and it was quickly reversed.

I'd suspect if it passes, you'll see schools adjust to a later time causing a trickle down impact on schedules for parents/anyone in education causing loss of that extra hour in the evening anyway. Any daytime business too for that matter.

A bit of apples to oranges but this actually makes me think of the time that Des Moines tried to save some money by deactivating 20% of street lights in 2003. In 2004, a child was struck at night and killed by a car. That decision was reversed just a couple weeks after that incident.
