Much of Iowa is known for its rolling farmland, but western Iowa has a landscape that stands out from the rest of the state. 🌾

The Loess Hills were formed thousands of years ago, when winds carried fine silt from the Missouri River Valley and deposited it along the valley’s eastern edge. Over time, erosion shaped the land into the steep hills, narrow ridges, and winding valleys we see today.

Stretching through parts of seven Iowa counties, the Loess Hills are a remarkable reminder that Iowa’s landscape has a story far older than its farms and small towns.

Hy-Vee’s story began in 1930, when Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened a small grocery store in Beaconsfield, Iowa. What started as one little store grew into a familiar name across Iowa and beyond.
For many Iowa families, grocery shopping used to be a weekly routine filled with simple memories. Walking the aisles with Mom and Dad, picking out a favorite treat, and sometimes running into someone you knew.
