Kathy Griffin first appeared on Seinfeld in Season 7’s “The Doll,” playing Sally Weaver, Susan Ross’s irritating friend. Months later, she performed a stand-up routine on HBO, where she told a story about Jerry Seinfeld snapping at her when she asked him for a favor during filming. Instead of taking offense, Seinfeld watched the special, found it amusing, and decided to bring Griffin back to the show.

That led to her return in Season 9’s “The Cartoon,” where Sally Weaver reappears as a struggling stand-up comic. In a clever twist, the episode mirrors Griffin’s real-life experience — her character even works Jerry into her act, just as Griffin had done in her routine.
