Along with the murals, Valley Junction’s galleries will come together to showcase work from regional, national, and international artists — with plenty of opportunities to shop one-of-a-kind art, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, and more.

It’s free and open to the public, so come for the art and stick around for local food, drinks, and shopping throughout the Junction.

West Des Moines, IA – As a special feature of its Fall Gallery Night, the Historic Valley Junction Foundation is celebrating five newly completed public art projects in the district’s pedestrian walkways. Fall Gallery Night takes place on Friday, October 9 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and features Valley Junction’s galleries and arts-related businesses along Fifth St. in West Des Moines, as well as several pop-up galleries. The event is free and open to all.

Fall Gallery Night will be enhanced by performers at the new mural locations. The artists will also be on hand to talk with visitors about their vision and creative process. The pieces were chosen from submissions to the Historic Valley Junction Foundation’s Design Committee. Public preferences were also gauged on social media. The five large-scale artworks vary widely in style and approach, but all reflect Valley Junction’s rich history and culture. A free trolley will be available to take people between the gallery and mural locations.

The five mural and sculptural pieces, the largest public art investment in Valley Junction history, are the first phase in the Foundation’s “Vivid Junction” initiative – a collaborative, cumulative effort in district placemaking and improvements to honor Valley Junction’s heritage, elevate human creativity, and draw the community together. The walkway enhancement is called “Vivid Junction – Off the Rails.” Valley Junction will be celebrating new works by Thomas Agran and Drew Etienne (Iowa City), Biafra (Minneapolis), Mike Giron and A Midsummer’s Mural (Omaha), Nick Goettling (Chicago), and Jimmy Navarro (Des Moines).

These projects were made possible with the support of Bravo Greater Des Moines, Microsoft, and the City of West Des Moines.
