Strong thunderstorms continue moving through parts of southwest Iowa, with radar showing heavy rain, frequent lightning and several intense storm cores.

BREAKING: VEHICLE FIRE ON I-80 NEAR WALNUT

A large vehicle fire is drawing a heavy emergency response on Interstate 80 near mile marker 48.7, just east of Walnut, late Sunday night.

Iowa DOT camera imagery around 10:09 p.m. shows flames and heavy smoke coming from a vehicle with multiple emergency crews on scene.

Drivers should use caution and expect possible delays in the area. We’re working to confirm additional details, including whether anyone was injured.

Mile marker 48 is in the Walnut area of Pottawattamie County.

Iowa’s backfield could be a problem this fall. Kamari Moulton is coming off an 878-yard season, and South Dakota transfer L.J. Phillips Jr. arrives after putting up 1,920 yards and 19 touchdowns. This may be less about naming an RB1 and more about figuring out how to feed both.

Iowa could have one of the Big Ten’s more interesting running back combinations this fall.

Kamari Moulton returns after rushing for 878 yards in 2025, while South Dakota transfer L.J. Phillips Jr. joins the Hawkeyes after a season in which he rushed for 1,920 yards and 19 touchdowns, according to Black Heart Gold Pants.

Both backs are listed on Iowa’s 2026 roster, giving the Hawkeyes two proven options in the backfield.

The question may not be who is RB1 — it may be how Iowa finds enough carries for both.

Who should get more touches this season: Moulton or Phillips?

Fairfield was still dealing with some serious humidity early Sunday evening.

At 6:35 p.m., the temperature was 86 degrees, but with a dew point of 81, it felt like 102 degrees.

It’s still a warm and muggy evening across southwest Iowa.

Shenandoah was at 86 degrees at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, with a dew point of 77. That pushed the heat index up to 97 degrees — pretty sticky for this late in the day.

Major League Baseball will return to the Field of Dreams site in Dyersville on Thursday, Aug. 13, for a regular-season game between the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies, the league announced Friday.

A driver died after a Linn County deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation at Williams Boulevard and East Southview Road at 9:13 p.m. Aug. 8, according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say a driver died after a Linn County pursuit ended in a ditch near Lefebure Road and Wright Brothers Boulevard on Aug. 8.
