SEVERE WEATHER RISK FOR IOWA ON FRIDAY

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Iowa under a Slight Risk for severe weather on Friday.

Scattered strong to severe storms are expected Friday afternoon into Friday night across parts of Iowa and the Upper Midwest.

The main threats include large to very large hail, damaging wind gusts, and the possibility of a couple tornadoes.

Storms may already be ongoing Friday morning, but the greater concern appears to be later in the day as instability increases and new storms develop along a cold front. If storms can remain more isolated into the evening, the tornado risk could increase.

This is still a Day 3 outlook, so details will likely change as we get closer. For now, Friday is a day to keep an eye on, especially for anyone with outdoor plans, travel, or evening events across Iowa.

Heads up for Wednesday:

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms across parts of the Northern Plains into the Upper Mississippi Valley.

For Iowa, the main concern appears to stay mostly north and northwest of the state, but areas closer to the South Dakota and Minnesota borders should still keep an eye on the forecast Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night.

Storms that develop in the region could produce:

Large hail
Damaging wind gusts
An isolated tornado risk farther northwest during the early storm phase

The highest risk looks to be across parts of South Dakota, Minnesota, and the northern Plains, but if storms organize and move southeast, northern Iowa could see some impacts later in the day or overnight.

This is not a statewide Iowa severe weather setup right now, but it is one worth watching, especially for northwest and north-central Iowa.

We’ll continue watching the latest outlooks and updates.

Des Moines Motorcycle Crash: 47-Year-Old Killed After Attempted Traffic Stop

DES MOINES, Iowa — A 47-year-old Des Moines man was killed late Monday night in a motorcycle crash at 2nd Avenue and Euclid Avenue in Polk County, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The crash happened at 11:10 p.m. on June 1, 2026.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Adam May, 47, of Des Moines, was driving a 2002 Yamaha motorcycle westbound on Euclid Avenue when a trooper attempted to stop him for a traffic violation.

The Iowa State Patrol states May accelerated away from a fully marked patrol car and continued driving recklessly at a high rate of speed, making bad passes while attempting to flee law enforcement.

Authorities said May attempted to cross 2nd Avenue on a red light and was struck by a northbound 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by David Rother, 69, of Des Moines.

May was thrown from the motorcycle and transported to Mercy Hospital by Des Moines Fire.

The motorcycle and Chevrolet Monte Carlo were both towed by Central Iowa Towing.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Des Moines Police Department and Des Moines Fire.
