⚠️WEEKEND TRAVEL IMPACTS⚠️
Our next winter system is headed our way and will impact any Sunday travel with ice, snow, wind, and cold.
A strong cold front will pass over Iowa Sunday mid to late morning. This will bring wind gusts near 45mph and morning rain showers. The cold air will move in and we will dip below freezing through morning to midday and into the afternoon. Any moisture on untreated surfaces will freeze and roads will become slick.
As the temperatures drop, the rain will also transition to a wintry mix of freezing rain/sleet for the lat le morning to early afternoon. This will add to the slick road conditions for the afternoon. Snow will prevail as the final form of precipitation into the overnight hours. Accumulations are still uncertain, so the attached snowfall potential will adjust as we get closer. The trend now is favoring more than an inch along and north of highway 30. An inch or less south of highway 30 including the DSM Metro.
Areas that receive enough snow will also have to deal with blowing snow with 45 mph gusts, potentially continuing into Monday. Blowing snow could limit visibilities and generate potential whiteout conditions for the northern half of the state Sunday afternoon into the night. Wind chills will drop below zero and we could see -10° to -20° feels like temps Monday morning.
This is a good reason to change travel plans. One option would be to move travel to Saturday with morning fog clearing for the afternoon. Sunday early morning would be another option, but arriving at your destination before 10am would be ideal. Areas will already have trecherous travel by mod to late morning. Pushing travel into Monday could still hold blowing snow potential depending on how much snow falls where you are traveling along with the cold.
