It's open! The Novel Science Membership is live today.

I've been working on this for the last few weeks, and really for the last year. Each month you get hands-on science that goes with a family read-aloud, all planned so you can print and go. (And maybe even bind it)

There's something new in it that I'm really excited to share, reading guides.

I spent a long time looking for an ELA curriculum that fit how we homeschool, and never found one. So I made one. Every guide puts a living book at the center, and it walks you through comprehension, literary analysis, and grammar, all built around the story you're already reading together.

Here's what lands in the members area every month, on the 20th: a science unit, a reading guide, a holiday mini unit, Bible verse copywork, and a bonus printable (this month is a rainforest board game.

Founding families get $49 a year through Oct 31, and that price stays the same every year you renew.

Part 2:

We tested the black walnuts in water and tossed the ones that floated to the top. Then we used a hammer to crack them. Maybe we should get a nutcracker. Weigh in in the comments!

Be honest, would you eat the one with a bug on it?

Check back later to see how we test and crack these bad boys.

You can find black walnuts in more than half of the
US states. Maybe more if someone intentionally planted them in a park area. They're very prolific so don't worry about stealing from the squirrels.

Harvesting tips:
Preferably you want the hull to be green and soft.
You can still gather the ones without a hull, or if the hull has blackened, just spot check for mold.

When you get home, toss the hulled ones in a bin of water and throw out any that float!
Black Walnuts are high in antioxidants and omega-3s so they're worth adding to your diet and they're usually free!

Give me all the whimsy.

Homeschooling is hard, and yet, I’m fighting to stay home with my kids. I keep seeing people say that moms who share the magic are lying, or that “you’ve got this, mama” is just empty talk. I don’t think so. Both the hard days and the wonder are real at my house.

The other day we skipped the plan and went on a walk, nothing fancy, and came home with a mushroom, edible nuts, and conkers.

Slowing down gave us more than the schedule would have.

When the day falls apart at your house, how do you shift the mood in your household?

🌲Pinecones can predict the rain, and your kids can test it tonight with a bowl of water!

Nope, it's not alive. The scales are built from layers that soak up water at different rates, so when it's wet they bend shut to protect the seeds.

Dry day? They open up and let the seeds fly on the wind.

Next, set it in a sunny window and watch it open back up. It'll do this over and over, like a tiny weather station from your backyard.
