Talks are happening to restore Village of Niles Free Bus service, which has been suspended since September.

Niles Mayor George Alpogianis and village officials reviewed a draft agreement sent from Pace Suburban Bus officials on Monday (Dec. 8) that could end the village’s suspension of the Niles Free Bus service that took place in September.

One more private event this month, and White Eagle Banquets is done, after 60 years.

“End of an era, saying goodbye to a Niles landmark,” the headline on Victoria Banquets' website said. “For over 60 years, the White Eagle has been an iconic gathering place for the Polish community of Niles and surrounding Chicago suburbs.”

If last weekend seemed like a lot of snow in Niles, it was actually historic.

Snow totals measured between six and 11 inches during the long snowfall from the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, Nov. 29, into Sunday, Nov. 30. In Niles, public works crews began 12-hour shifts, plowing and treating roads late Friday night.

Niles Fire Department firefighters and those from other communities responded to an external fire at the Miraj restaurant and club early this morning (Friday) at Milwaukee and Dempster.

Niles firefighters led a briefly-elevated alarm response to a fire at the Miraj Restaurant at Milwaukee Avenue and Dempster Street that was confined to the building’s ventilation systems and related heating and kitchen hood systems, officials said. No injuries were reported.

Niles firefighters extinguished a fire that engulfed the cab of a garbage truck in an alley off Oketo near Oakton before 8 am this morning.

Flames reached above the roofline of nearby homes as the cab of a garbage truck burned in an alley off Oketo Avenue near Oakton Street in Niles on Friday (Nov. 21). Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 7:18 a.m.

Two new restaurants recently held ribbon-cutting ceremonies with the Niles Chamber of Commerce: Hello Shawarma, 5606 W. Touhy Ave., on Wednesday, Nov. 12, and Magic Pepper, 8502 W. Golf Rd. on Oct. 27.

A crash took the life of a pedestrian right in front of Maine East High School in Park Ridge this morning. Eastbound Dempster and northbound Potter are both closed.

A car flipped yesterday in a Golf Mill parking lot, no injuries reported.

A Dodge Durango carrying four young adults flipped onto its side Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 12) in the parking lot of Golf Mill Shopping Center, but none of the occupants were injured, officials said.
