Journal reporters went to cover Founders Day in Niles, but found an intense, fast-moving storm canceled the event, and watched as village staffers jumped in to clean up after the storm passed.

A fast-moving storm hit Golf Mill Park hard just after the start of Founders Day festivities at about 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. Shortly before heavy winds and hail struck the area, police ordered the area evacuated. The event was later canceled.

A planned letter-writing and protest event, initially planned to take place at the Niles-Maine District Library, was moved, with letter writing taking place in the Park Ridge Public Library after a planned 11:30 a.m. protest near the library.

Russians around the world will be demonstrating on Saturday, Aug. 16, including potentially in the Northwest suburbs. While a protest was originally set to take place at the Niles-Maine Public Library, organizers decided to move it elsewhere.

Niles committees are working on e-bike regulations, one committee chairman said, "This is a starting point, not a knee-jerk reaction."
