Well, Niles certainly had an eventful 2025. Here's our look back at the top stories of the year.

From major staff shake-ups to the suspension of the Niles Free Bus to an election decided by a single vote, Niles had another eventful year. The following are the Journal’s top 10 stories of 2025 in no particular order:

Niles Fire Department firefighters responded to a 3 car crash on Milwaukee Avenue at Dempster Friday night.

A Ford Escape struck a Toyota Prius from behind while stopped in the northbound lanes of Milwaukee Avenue near Dempster Street at about 9 p.m. Friday, according to police.

The village of Niles swore in Parrick Maloney the new Niles Fire Department chief tonight. His first day is Dec. 29. Mayor Alpogianis also thanked and praised Rich Scipoine who served for about a year as acting chief.

A Niles man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his estranged girlfriend Tuesday morning (Dec. 16) in Schaumburg, police said.

A fire fought by North Maine firefighters brings 6 fire companies to a duplex.

As North Maine Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a house fire at 9125 Barberry Ln. in unincorporated Des Plaines Tuesday (Dec. 16), crews found one side of the duplex ablaze with flames coming from a second-floor window.

The Niles-Maine District Library Board of Trustees adopted a new strategic plan at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 10, marking the first update to the guiding document in many years.

The 51-year-old man found dead in a vehicle in a Niles parking lot on Friday (Dec. 12) died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Niles Finance Director Kent Oliven has retired and resigned from the village, his last day Tuesday, Dec. 2, as Tom Glaser has been brought in to serve as interim finance director.
