Journal reporters went to cover Founders Day in Niles, but found an intense, fast-moving storm canceled the event, and watched as village staffers jumped in to clean up after the storm passed.

A fast-moving storm hit Golf Mill Park hard just after the start of Founders Day festivities at about 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. Shortly before heavy winds and hail struck the area, police ordered the area evacuated. The event was later canceled.

A big fast moving storm caused Niles Police to evacuate the Niles Founders Day event until the storm blows over. High winds picked up tents and tossed them like toys.

A planned letter-writing and protest event, initially planned to take place at the Niles-Maine District Library, was moved, with letter writing taking place in the Park Ridge Public Library after a planned 11:30 a.m. protest near the library.

Russians around the world will be demonstrating on Saturday, Aug. 16, including potentially in the Northwest suburbs. While a protest was originally set to take place at the Niles-Maine Public Library, organizers decided to move it elsewhere.

Niles police brought back the National Night Out celebration for the first time since 2020, and it was very well attended.

An estimated 1,000 people visited Golf Mill Park to celebrate National Night Out with Niles police on Tuesday, Aug. 5.

Depositions are being taken regarding new s*x abuse allegations at Maryville Academy by Fathers Smyth and Ryan. Cardinal Cupich recently removed Ryan from ministry. Smyth passed away in 2019.

Two black males, who police said were dressed as females, sprayed Mace or some other type of chemical agent on a store clerk before robbing a Park Ridge 7-Eleven of liquor and ci******es Tuesday night (Aug. 5).

Moody’s Investors Service, the agency that issues bond ratings for municipalities among other entities, withdrew its bond rating for the village of Niles on Wednesday, July 16.
