Local resident Len Johnson took on the herculean task of extracting the 1940 cornerstone from the old Des Plaines Post Office and Journal & Topics building at 622 Graceland Ave. in Des Plaines this week. The process revealed a small time capsule behind the cornerstore, which had to be chiseled out and cut open with a Dremel. Johnson and his crew brought the cornerstone and time capsule with contents to the Des Plaines History Center on Friday afternoon. Demolition of the building on Graceland is expected soon.
