Qiao Collective is pleased to publish the following original essay by Chinese Canadian comrades William Dere and Wawa Li.

The essay provides an in-depth investigation of Canada’s alignment with the US New Cold War on China and its ripple effects for Chinese diaspora communities. Drawing on the history of Canadian exclusion, the authors outline how a renewed Yellow Peril discourse has targeted Chinese Canadians with state repression, investigation, and silencing under the guise of combatting “foreign influence.”

Though Prime Minister Mark Carney’s much-vaunted visit to Beijing and seeming repudiation of the US-led “rules-based international order” indicates a potential trend of warming China-Canada ties, Dere and Li remind us of the constitutive role that Sinophobia has played in Canadian politics for over a century. These deep-seated legacies of racism, state violence, and imperial alignment must be rooted out if Canada is to truly chart an independent course from US hegemony.

Ever since its founding, the People’s Republic of China has endured an onslaught of Western propaganda about its alleged human rights abuses. More recently, US fearmongering has also turned to China’s supposed influence operations directed at both the West and the rest of the Global South, particularly through apps such as TikTok. It’s a multi-front information war expertly contrived to divert attention from the US itself.

China has decided it’s had enough and is striking back in kind. Far from crude “whataboutism,” it’s doing so through exhaustively researched reports compiled at both official and semi-official levels. It’s likely you’ve heard absolutely nothing about them through Western mainstream media, and that’s by design.

Join us as we break down two of these documents: the PRC State Council’s report on “Human Rights Violations in the United States in 2024,” and the Xinhua Institute’s analysis of “Colonization of the Mind: The Means, Roots, and Global Perils of US Cognitive Warfare.” As we’ll find, they’re not just crude inversions of US propaganda techniques. They’re meant to be serious tools for anti-imperialists to understand our enemy and fortify ourselves against their ever-evolving ideological offensives.

After 130 years of separation caused by Japanese colonization and U.S. intervention, Taiwan stands at the frontline of a new Cold War; not by choice, but by imperial design. This is not the story of a democratic island under threat; it is the story of how Taiwan was turned into a military outpost, first by Japan, then by the United States. It was once part of China, tied through migration, culture, and resistance. But after the Communist victory in 1949, the U.S. blocked reunification; armed a dictatorship; and built a Cold War narrative that still shapes how the world sees Taiwan today. From U.S. warships to billion-dollar arms deals, Taiwan is now central to Washington’s plans to contain China. But the left must see through the slogans. This is not a battle for freedom; it is a battle over sovereignty, history, and who gets to define Asia’s future. On 26 July, the pro-”independence” ruling party of Taiwan forced 24 opposition lawmakers to submit to recall elections. In a resounding defeat, voters rejected every single recall and kept all 24 in their seats.

Mainstream media would have you believe that these legislators were shadowy agents of Chinese influence. But are Taiwan’s leaders really the stalwart defenders of democracy that their Western backers make them out to be? Or was this a naked power grab by forces that would plunge the island headlong into a shooting war between China and the US?

The truth is that all of these lawmakers belong to the Kuomintang (KMT), a deeply anticommunist party directly descended from the US-backed Chiang Kai-shek regime that fled to Taiwan after losing mainland China to the Communist Party (CPC) in 1949. It is the height of absurdity to accuse any of them of loyalty to the People’s Republic.

But on principle the KMT oppose “Taiwan independence,” support warmer cross-strait ties, and uphold the one-China principle – albeit not under communist leadership. For that cardinal sin, Taiwan’s modern-day ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has tried every trick in the book to paint them as stooges of their former CPC enemies. The failed recall push is just the latest in a litany of undemocratic schemes to remove all obstacles to untrammeled one-party rule by the DPP’s pro-independence, pro-war camp.

Join us as we break down the real motivations for the recall plot, why the people of Taiwan so thoroughly defeated it, and what all this means for the United States’ New Cold War on China.

Behind the Molotovs and protest art, the Hong Kong demonstrations weren’t fighting colonialism, they were protecting it.

Framed in the West as a struggle for democracy, the protests in fact advanced a deeply right-wing agenda: preserving Hong Kong’s British-imposed legal system, aligning with U.S. empire, and serving as a strategic tool to undermine China from within.

This explainer strips away the liberal romanticism and Western left confusion revealing a protest movement that openly collaborated with the same U.S. officials who attack liberation struggles across the Global South.

To equate Hong Kong’s protest movement with Palestine, Haiti, or Minneapolis is not solidarity, it’s misrepresentation and betrayal.

True liberation is measured not by the slogans shouted, but by the systems dismantled and by who, in the end, benefits.

In 2023 China stunned the world by brokering a normalization of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia. The move threw a wrench in US plans to enlist the Saudis fully into their Zionist-imperialist axis against Iran and the Palestinian resistance.

A year later, in the midst of an Israeli genocide that seemed only to deepen the intractable divide between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, China convened 14 Palestinian factions for reconciliation talks. Their joint Beijing Declaration marked the biggest step toward national unity in decades.

It’s no accident that bitterly divided parties are turning increasingly to China to resolve their differences. Through its founding commitment to collective security, mutual non-interference, and genuine sovereign equality, Beijing has built the kind of trust that the West can never replicate. When Washington, Camp David, and Oslo are bywords for imposed surrender, that makes a world of difference.

In 1965, Mao Zedong told a Palestinian delegation: ‘You are the gate of the great continent. We are the rear.’

That moment wasn’t symbolic. It was strategic.
For decades, China supported the Palestinian liberation struggle - not just in words, but in weapons, training and revolutionary theory. Palestinian fighters studied Mao’s writings on guerrilla warfare. China provided AK-47s, radio systems and tactical doctrine. Arafat visited Beijing 14 times. PLO fighters trained in Chinese camps. And Nakba Day was marked in Tiananmen Square.

This video traces that forgotten history. From the high tide of national liberation to the modern battlefield of Gaza. Today, as Gaza faces a genocidal assault and the Axis of Resistance confronts Israeli and US power on multiple fronts, China’s role has returned to the conversation. Not as a militant sponsor, but as a geopolitical force shaping the balance of power. It’s refusing US demands to join the Red Sea blockade, speaking out at the International Court of Justice in defence of armed resistance and slowly distancing itself from Israel, politically and economically.

But this story goes deeper than policy. It’s about memory - about the bond between people who shared the long road of resistance from China’s war against Japan, to Palestine’s war against Zionism. It’s also about the global information war, where platforms censor the oppressed and Chinese apps such as TikTok, Weibo and Bilibili have become unlikely spaces for pro-resistance content to survive.

From the tunnels of Gaza to the factories of Shenzhen, from Hezbollah’s rockets to the ghost ships of the Red Sea, this is the new map of global struggle A map where Palestine is still the gate. And the world is shifting behind it.

Western media is awash with lurid stories of China’s “new colonialism” in Africa, of “debt trap diplomacy” and rampant seizures of sovereign assets. It’s an especially brazen inversion of the truth when the old colonialism endures in barely veiled form. We see it in the devastation wrought by IMF austerity, in France’s chokehold on the CFA franc and the G5 Sahel, and in AFRICOM’s 29 bases across the continent.

Through the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China today counterposes sovereign development to austerity; industrialization to resource dependency; debt relief to debt bo***ge; and non-interference to regime change. By offering a superior alternative to the West, it’s slowly upending a world-system 500 years in the making.

But this friendship is built on more robust foundations than many realize. At a time when New China was poorer than most countries in Africa, it lent them crucial diplomatic, military, and ideological support in their struggles for independence. Newly freed African nations in turn helped restore China to its rightful place in the UN. No amount of Western propaganda can shake the enduring memory and relevance of that joint struggle today.

Our first collaboration with !

On September 3, China celebrated 80 years since the defeat of Japan with a massive military parade in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. World leaders from 26 countries were there to honor their joint efforts in the world anti-fascist struggle. But not a single representative of the Western Allies was among them.

Having already boycotted Moscow’s Victory Day parade in May, the West was nowhere to be found at either of the year’s largest anti-fascist gatherings. What’s worse, it was following the lead of the defeated powers: Japan, Germany, and the modern successors of Ukraine’s wartime N**i collaborators.

In fact the West had long ago made its peace with the remnants of both Japanese and German fascism. Before and after the war, colonial forces on both sides found common cause in the struggle against communism. Arrayed against them were precisely the countries that had sacrificed the most to crush the Axis: China and the USSR.

Eighty years on, the war for historical memory still rages. And the battle lines are clearer than ever.

Today, October 1, marks the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. This epochal event was greeted with immediate enthusiasm not just in China but among oppressed peoples fighting for national liberation across the globe. And a crucial condition for the revolution’s success was, in turn, the worldwide upsurge in anticolonial struggle immediately after World War II. With the imperial war machine over-extended in theaters as varied as Algeria, Palestine, India, Malaya, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Korea, the Communist Party of China took just four years to defeat a regime that it had previously fought for two decades at an extreme disadvantage.

For almost that entire time, the Western corporate and colonial press had systematically suppressed or distorted any news coming out of China’s long-gestating revolution. Without an anti-imperialist alternative, the laboring masses of the West and even much of the South would have been wholly unprepared for its world-historic triumph in 1949. For that, the Chinese people have always felt an immense debt of gratitude to the intrepid journalists, educators, and artists who dared to tell their story to the world: from Edgar Snow and Agnes Smedley to Paul Robeson, W.E.B. Du Bois, and countless others.

In that spirit, Qiao Collective is deeply honored to unite with comrades across Latin America (, and ), Africa (NAAM) and the African diaspora (), and the Islamic world () in a new anti-imperialist media network called Sovereign Media. Together we aim to pierce the veil of Western discursive hegemony and disinformation, bringing you unfiltered reporting from the frontlines of Fidel Castro’s “battle of ideas.”

Over the next several days, and regularly thereafter, we’ll be posting original content produced in collaboration with Sovereign Media. Please follow and all our partners to support this vital work

This week, China commemorated the 80th anniversary since its victory in the War Against Japanese Aggression, and the broader World Anti-Fascist War. But China's celebration of the defeat of fascism has become mired in the geopolitics of the New Cold War. In this context, Qiao Collective is pleased to publish transcripts from two recent interventions into the roiling debate over the legacy of Japanese imperialism in East Asia.

The first was delivered by Zang Ruxing (臧汝興) of the Labor Party of Taiwan at a conference hosted in late July 2025 by Okinawa-based anti-militarist organization ZENKO (National Assembly for Peace and Democracy).

The second is from a speech by one of our members, Charles Xu, at a Los Angeles rally organized by anti-imperialist Korean diaspora organization to commemorate Korea’s Liberation Day.
