šØ Yes, Iām talking about education again today. And thereās a reason.ā£
ā£
Because what weāre seeing in Michigan is too important to post about once, shake our heads and move on.ā£
ā£
Michiganās newly released 2026 M-STEP results show just 38.2% of third graders scored proficient in English Language Arts ā the lowest third-grade result in the 12-year history of M-STEP.ā£
ā£
Yesterday we talked about what that means for our kids.ā£
ā£
Today I want to talk about what it means for ALL OF US.ā£
ā£
And yes, private-school parents ā Iām talking to you too šā£
ā£
You can choose a different school for your child.ā£
ā£
You cannot choose a different generation for them to inherit Michigan with.ā£
ā£
Todayās third graders will eventually become our nurses, electricians, engineers, police officers, entrepreneurs, employees and employers.ā£
ā£
Theyāll buy homes. Start businesses. Pay taxes. Raise families. Vote.ā£
ā£
Eventually, theyāll run this state.ā£
ā£
Thatās why education policy IS economic policy.ā£
ā£
We can spend billions trying to lure companies to Michigan. We can subsidize factories, chase data centers and talk endlessly about AI and advanced manufacturing.ā£
ā£
But hereās the inconvenient little detail:ā£
ā£
Someone still has to be qualified to do the jobs.ā£
ā£
A company can build the most technologically advanced facility in America, but if Michigan isnāt producing an educated, capable workforce, theyāll find that workforce somewhere else.ā£
ā£
And literacy is foundational to all of it.ā£
ā£
Third graders donāt stay third graders.ā£
ā£
Which is why I refuse to look at 38.2% and shrug because my own child attends a different school ā and neither should you.ā£
ā£
Public school. Private school. Homeschool. No children. Grown children.ā£
ā£
This affects every single one of us.ā£
ā£
We arenāt simply educating Michiganās children.ā£
ā£
Weāre building Michiganās future workforce, economy and leadership.ā£
ā£
So yes, Iām talking about education again.⣠Because 38.2% isnāt just someone elseās problem.ā£
ā£
Itās a problem for ALL of us.
