Rock 104.9 Detroit’s New Rock Alternative Basically rock from the grunge movement to now. It's a musical abortion!

Seeming that the ONE station in Grand Rapids I moved here to work for (WGRD) changed ownership (bankruptcy), It was then purchased by another corporate conglomerate, fired 99.9% of all local staff, NOW run off satellite & reliant on computer automation (except the FB&HW Show, which is a kick ass show, btw). There is NOTHING local about the station anymore, except the morning show FB&HW, which make

s itself well-known that it's show is "it's OWN entity". This station that used to play "New rock and rock from the 90's", now plays a horrible mix, the same exact playlist that is heard and controlled by Albany, NY.... One second, you're listening to a new song by Disturbed, followed by some sh*tty 80's "hairband", then to some 70's rock. We here at ROCK 104.9 believe the "classic rock" should be left to the "classic rock station" (LAV does a great job at it, why mess with it). I see no point in playing "80's hair bands", since WGRD's "sister station" plays it all (98.7 WFGR).... So, to make a long story short... ROCK 104.9 is filling the void of playing EXCLUSIVELY Brand new rock with 90's rock! Who else is doing that without throwing Rat's "Round and Round" in between Five Finger Death Punch and Ozzy from 1979??

For thousands of generations, humans could only imagine what a sunset might look like on another planet.

Now we have photographs.

NASA’s Curiosity rover captured the first color image of a sunset from the surface of Mars on April 15, 2015, from Gale Crater. Perseverance has since photographed Martian sunsets as well. The images are real photographs taken by cameras on the planet, although NASA calibrates and white-balances the colors to account for the cameras’ characteristics. (NASA Science)

The sunset also looks different from one on Earth.

Near the setting Sun, Martian skies can take on a distinctive blue color. Mars has a thin atmosphere filled with fine dust particles. These particles allow blue light to pe*****te the atmosphere more efficiently than longer-wavelength light, keeping the blue tones concentrated around the Sun while yellow and red light are scattered more broadly across the sky. The effect is most noticeable around sunset because sunlight travels through a longer path through the atmosphere when the Sun is close to the horizon. The exact optical processes behind the blue appearance are still not completely understood. (NASA Science)

The Sun itself also looks smaller from Mars because the planet is farther from the Sun than Earth is.

Metallica is one of the biggest metal bands on the planet. What most of their fans don't know is what the band has quietly been building off stage: one of the largest trade-school pipelines in the country.

It runs through their foundation, All Within My Hands, and specifically the Metallica Scholars Initiative. In partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges, the band funds career and technical education, real, hands-on training for real jobs. Welding. Plumbing. Electrical work. And increasingly, nursing, EMT and firefighting, automotive repair, pipefitting, and agriculture.

The scale is the surprising part. As of 2026, the program supports 93 community colleges across all 50 states, plus Guam. Its latest round alone put more than 3 million dollars into those schools. And it has now backed some 13,000 students in learning skills that lead to stable, well-paying careers, with the program recently expanding overseas too.

Frontman James Hetfield has explained why it matters to them. Touring, he points out, runs entirely on skilled trades: the electricians, drivers, cooks, and mechanics who make every show possible. The band said it wanted to reinvest in exactly those kinds of workers.

No splashy campaign. No album tie-in. Just a metal band deciding that the people who build and fix and wire the world deserve a shot, and quietly footing the bill for thousands of them 🤘
