None of us was ’lowed to see a book or try to learn. Dey say we gitsmarter den dey was if we learn anything, but we slips around and gits hold of dat Webster’s old blue back speller and we hides it ’til way in de night and den we lights a little pine torch,2 and studies dat spellin’ book. We learn it too. I can read some now and write a little too.

I have no education, I can neither read nor write, as a slave I was not allowed to have books. On Sundays I would go into the woods and gather ginseng which I would sell to the doctors for from 10¢ to 15¢ a pound and with this money I would buy a book that was called the Blue Back Speller. Our master would not allow us to have any books and when we were lucky enough to own a book we would have to keep it hid, for if our master would find us with a book he would whip us and take the book from us. After receiving three severe whippings I gave up and never again tried for any learning, and to this day I can neither read nor write.

Like most older Americans, I'm out of step with the nation as a whole in my general support of President Biden's handling of the Gaza War.

I am stunned that more Americans trust Donald "the deceiver" Trump over Biden to do a better job dealing with that conflict!

It is profoundly troubling to me that millions of Americans seem to be living in an alternate reality!

Opinion is split between those wanting the war to end and those pressing for a definitive Israeli victory, and the divide is starkest among older and younger generations.

Bad move, Lions management! Now, I believe 'Karma' won't allow the team to make it to a Super Bowl game!🥺

Fans kept showing up through YEARS and YEARS of lousy, losing football. Finally, Detroit has put a winning team on the field and what do fans get for their loyalty? A hike in seat prices up to 85%!

For this season, the average Lions ticket price is $302 -- that's about in the middle of NFL team pricing. Of course, tickets for this Lions season are slightly more than double from 2022 ($147 vs $302).

Restore the Roar? 'F' that. Never mind!👎🏾

Some fans reported an increase of as much as 85% on their season ticket prices for 2024 after the Lions had kept prices relatively flat since 2018.

ATTENTION ON DECK!!!

Did you know? Nearly 4,500 Americans died in the Iraq War. Their average age was 26-years old.

They didn't know each other, yet David Hickman and Jonathan Gifford are forever linked in U.S. Military history.

Gifford, a Marine private...and Hickman, an Army corporal...are the first and last American military people to die in the Iraq War.

Gifford, from Decatur, Illinois, was killed on March 22, 2003, just two days into Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Hickman, (pictured below), of Greensboro, North Carolina, died on November 14, 2011, a victim of one of those improvised bombs that were the signature weapons of the Iraq War.

God bless them for their service and their sacrifice. May they 'bask' in eternal glory.🙏🏾
