A new year of hope – The Michigan Citizen

"For most of the past year we endured the accelerated, brutal force of efforts to turn our city into a profit center for corporate greed at the expense of our children, our elders, and the life of people who have sustained the city for generations. We have learned some important lessons through these struggles. Read more:

Resistance and transformation – The Michigan Citizen

"It is unintelligent and unhealthy to have a foot on your neck, and not use all means available to remove the foot. All resistance to oppression is healthy for the oppressed... I am encouraged by this latest wave of resistance. But, while this activism is encouraging, and protesting is significant, it is clearly not enough. We need a long-term strategy guided by a clear vision of the society that we seek to bring into being."

Young people across the United States have recently set off a wave of resistance to police murders and a “justice system” that doesn’t value Black life. Direct action campaigns in and around Ferguson,...

Food is Life: When is less really more? – The Michigan Citizen

Governor Rick Snyder, last week, abolished the Michigan Food Policy Council. The 25-member body tasked with creating a healthy food supply for Michigan residents was formed in 2005 by then-governor Jennifer Granholm through an executive order and though the generosity of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The council was created to support local food systems and encourage agricultural diversity. It allowed citizens to have a voice in shaping those local food systems on a statewide level. By Snyder eliminating the council, he’s eliminated the voice of the citizens.

As we move forward in this battle for our food, there’s not much more comforting than to know that great food system minds gather together to address food issues. To most, this is a no-brainer. However,...

Energy companies set sights on war-torn Somalia for next big dig – The Michigan Citizen

Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, BP and Chevron are all activating plans to drill in Somalia...The initiative, however, appears to defy a continent-wide environmental movement to “keep the oil in the soil” in order to reduce carbon emissions and control global warming.

(GIN) — It may not be clear who is running Somalia these days, but energy companies appear to know who to call as they conduct onshore and offshore seismic surveys that could make the Horn of Africa...

OPINION: Legalized lynchings are on the rise – The Michigan Citizen

It’s been made abundantly clear that Black life holds little value in America’s so-called post-racial environment. Though our system of jurisprudence was made available to the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, the exercise of those rights came to less than satisfactory results. Irregular prosecutorial practices led to no indictment. The consequence of those practices led to legalized lynching. http://buff.ly/1z559oX

OPINION: Put those police cameras on Wall Street bankers – The Michigan Citizen

(President Obama) might be better advised to put cameras on bankers. Reckless, unaccountable and murderous police behavior must end, but the police are simply the gatekeepers assigned to keep order. Behind the gate is the American policy of isolating poor people of color in ghettos, ghettos deprived of jobs, of capital, of decent health care, of affordable housing, of good schools. http://buff.ly/1v9NWt8

OPINION: Why education reform cannot work – The Michigan Citizen

The United States espouses the goal of leaving no child behind, but it is clear that our Industrial Age system with time-based student progress is designed to leave children behind, and no educational reforms within that paradigm can change that dismal fact.

Think of our schools as a horse and buggy — it worked well in a different time, but times have changed.

OPINION: Stolen Christmas? – The Michigan Citizen

"What if people of conscience explained they cannot spend money in businesses that are silent in the face of oppression? Can those who are offended by the state of our nation cooperate with the evil that too many retail establishments are part of? To see evil and to participate in evil is evil."

Walmart will earn about a third of its profits from this Christmas shopping season. Jewelers earn nearly the same amount between November and December. If spending were evenly spread during the 12 months...

Still looking for change – The Michigan Citizen

As the end of another tumultuous year approaches, Black people again find ourselves in the relative same economic and political position as we were the year before, and the years preceding. In 2007, leading up to 2008, when the ultimate level of political history had finally come to fruition, Black folks and others were citing the mantra, “hope and change!” Quite frankly, we got more hope than real positive change. http://buff.ly/1sh2zzb

Beware of ‘Grand Bargains’ – The Michigan Citizen

Grand Bargains, whether pro-active or reactive, are a recurring mechanism for making the necessary modifications....Today’s mass incarceration is a good example. When the economy was based on agriculture, most people, including Blacks, lived in rural areas. In that era, the rapidly industrializing nation faced a labor shortage.

Part one of this series looked at the history of Grand Bargains going back to the U.S. Constitution. The purpose of all of them is the same: Keep the political and economic power of whites strong and...

5 ELA releases ‘Global Warming 2022’ – The Michigan Citizen

“Global Warming 2022,” the new album from Detroit hip hop pioneers 5 ELA, is a futuristic electro-funk hip hop snapshot of the world as it is today, and the hope that is shared for the future...“Police State” is the second song on the album, and features verses from 5 ELA members Mudd, Thyme and DJ Sicari rapping about the modern militarization of police departments in the United States, the oaths they were sworn to uphold, and the brutality being captured on video across the country.

The fires raging through urban society, from Detroit’s burning homes to the streets of Ferguson, Mo., are a blistering reminder of the heated social injustices in the world today.
