The most beautiful gold pieces I’ve ever seen came from Mali. But all the gold in Mali could never compare to the extraordinary woman who wears them. She is the color of mahogany. Has back length dreads and one of the brightest smiles you’ve ever seen. She was a mentor of sorts at my first full-time job. I remember observing people routinely and rudely invade her space as if she was invisible. I remember speaking to her after one such incident. Early-twenties me said “You can’t let those people treat you like that”. Her well traveled, fluent in 3 or 4 languages, mid-forties self said “They are IGNORANT”. In three words she expressed “Those people don’t run ish over here, step around them.” Many of us will need to remember that as we navigate these very WILD times.
