The mystery gator on Belle Isle has finally been caught — by a Metro Detroit dog trainer who turned his free day into an eight-hour hunt.

Stephen Hart tracked the reptile through the lagoons before spotting it under a tree. With help from another bystander, he managed to net the gator, which he named “Fafnir.”

It’s now safely housed at the Great Lakes Serpentarium in Westland, set to open on Halloween with a grand opening event featuring music, vendors, and a chance to see reptiles up close.

CHARGED ⚖️
Following an investigation by the Detroit Police Department (DPD), the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged Anthony Lee-Lamont Barnett, 54, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Latricia Green, 40, also of Detroit.

On August 22, 2025, it is alleged that Defendant Barnett aided Defendant Mario Green in fleeing from the scene of the homicide of Ms. Latricia Green. More complete facts and evidence will be placed on the record in court at the preliminary examination. An investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of Defendant Barnett on August 23, 2025.

Barnett has been charged with Accessory After the Fact and Lying to a Police Officer.

All suspects are presumed innocent pending further proceedings.
