His Excellency, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana, hereby declares to the nation, that he has found it a fitting tribute to Mr. Letsile Tebogo, โ€œBotswanaโ€™s Sensationโ€, to grant Batswana and residents an afternoon day-off, on this very day, Friday the 9th August, 2024.

The decision has been duly made to recognise and honour Letsile Tebogo as the first Motswana and first African to win a Gold Medal for 200m in the history of the Olympics. Furthermore, the President underscores, recognises and acknowledges Letsileโ€™s performance and achievement as markedly outstanding, and deserving of the nation to pause and celebrate him in a most unique, appropriate and responsible manner, that will be etched in the annals of the history of the Republic.

Accordingly, His Excellency President Masisi, wishes to state that, on behalf of all of the citizenry, he applauds Letsile and gives thanks unceasingly to his late mother.

๐Ÿ“Œ This is Elmina Castle, Ghana ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ

Elmina Castle was erected by the Portuguese in 1482 as Castelo de Sรฃo Jorge da Mina, also known as Castelo da Mina or simply Mina, in present-day Elmina, Ghana, formerly the Gold Coast. It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea, and the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara.

Architects: Diego d'Azambuja, Luis Alfonso (both Portuguese)

First established as a trade settlement, the castle later became one of the most important stops on the route of the Atlantic slave trade. The Dutch seized the fort from the Portuguese in 1637, after an unsuccessful attempt in 1596, and took over all of the Portuguese Gold Coast in 1642. The slave trade continued under the Dutch until 1814. In 1872, the Dutch Gold Coast, including the fort, became a possession of the United Kingdom.

The Gold Coast gained its independence as Ghana in 1957 from United Kingdom and now controls the castle.

Elmina Castle is a historical site, and was a major filming location for Werner Herzog's 1987 drama film Cobra Verde. The castle is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, along with other castles and forts in Ghana, because of its testimony to the Atlantic slave trade. It is a major tourist attraction in Ghana with over 60,000 visitors yearly.

Elmina Castle is a place you really have to visit anytime you tour Ghana.
