I want to say thank you to the James H. Cole Legacy Foundation for naming me the June 2026 Heroes & Hope Honoree. An honor like this doesn't belong to me alone, it belongs to everyone who's fought alongside me, and especially to the generations who came before.
My great-grandparents came north during the Great Migration chasing the same dreams that built Detroit. My mom worked at Duffield Library on West Grand, my dad cut hair at Hills Barber Shop on 7 Mile. They didn't have much, but they had everything that mattered - hard work, faith, and a commitment to education. They sent all six of us boys to Catholic high schools because they believed in lifting us up. That sacrifice shaped everything I do.
My parents and grandparents showed me that service isn't optional, it's a responsibility. Justice shouldn't depend on how much money you have. Opportunity shouldn't be limited by circumstance. And our community should know we've got people in their corner - always.
I'm grateful, I'm blessed, and I'm more committed than ever to showing up for the people of Detroit.
