From teen takeovers to the breakdown of the Black American family in Detroit, FOX 2 Detroit’s Charlie Langton asked some really profound questions in this interview.

Langton asked me to join the set to talk about some lawsuits, instead I took him to church!

I want to say thank you to the James H. Cole Legacy Foundation for naming me the June 2026 Heroes & Hope Honoree. An honor like this doesn't belong to me alone, it belongs to everyone who's fought alongside me, and especially to the generations who came before.

My great-grandparents came north during the Great Migration chasing the same dreams that built Detroit. My mom worked at Duffield Library on West Grand, my dad cut hair at Hills Barber Shop on 7 Mile. They didn't have much, but they had everything that mattered - hard work, faith, and a commitment to education. They sent all six of us boys to Catholic high schools because they believed in lifting us up. That sacrifice shaped everything I do.

My parents and grandparents showed me that service isn't optional, it's a responsibility. Justice shouldn't depend on how much money you have. Opportunity shouldn't be limited by circumstance. And our community should know we've got people in their corner - always.

I'm grateful, I'm blessed, and I'm more committed than ever to showing up for the people of Detroit.

I wanted to share this great opportunity because this is exactly what Perkins for the People is about.

Right now, Tennessee State University and Meharry Medical College have an accelerated 7-year MD/DDS program with full-ride scholarship potential—and they currently have ZERO Black male applicants.

Think about that. Zero.

If you know a Black male high school senior with a 3.5 GPA and 28 ACT who wants to be a doctor or dentist, this is his moment. Full scholarship. Seven years to change his life and, hopefully, come back to serve our community.

Here's who to contact with candidate info:

Ms. Lalita Hodge (Program Coordinator)

Please SHARE this. TAG someone who needs to see it. Make that call. Our brothers deserve to know this exists, and our communities need more doctors who look like us and understand where we come from.

This is the work. This is the mission. Let's make this happen for someone in The D!

Two dozen families and counting have reached out to share their own experiences with police overstepping, acting illegally, harming instead of helping.

You have seen the video. Now hear the story behind it.

This is my client, Carnell Givens. On April 2nd, Detroit police were chasing a young man they suspected of a curfew violation. That man ran into Carnell's home.

Carnell did everything right. He told officers there were kids inside. He put his hands up. He opened the door. He tried to talk to them.

Twenty police cars pulled up. And they beat him anyway.

In his own home. Hands up. No warrant. No crime committed.

We are suing the City of Detroit and every officer involved. Because what you saw in that video is not a mistake. It is a pattern. And the people of this city deserve better.

If this happened to you, call my office.

I have spent my career standing between power and the people it preys on. Today, I am proud to stand with two Metro Detroit families who refused to be silenced.

Carnell Givens. Willie and Sandra Hall. Different families. Different cities. Same story: Detroit police and Warren police forced their way into their homes without warrants, used excessive force against innocent people, and then filed felony charges to cover it up.

Every single charge was dismissed.

This is not a coincidence. This is a pattern. And patterns have to be confronted.

I am filing federal civil rights lawsuits on behalf of both families and I am calling on anyone else who has experienced this kind of abuse at the hands of Michigan law enforcement to come forward.

Your home is your sanctuary. The Constitution protects it. And I will too.

Two multi-million-dollar civil lawsuits have been filed against police departments in Detroit and Warren following allegations that officers entered homes without warrants. Both cases claim unlawful entry and excessive use of force.
