Safety First… No, It’s Mr. First

Safety first?
No… it’s Mr. First.

He laughs and giggles
while students struggle and fall.
Honestly…
he might be the worst of them all.

Even when it comes to my mother,
and even my little brother.
Respect should come easy,
but with him it’s another.

He cussed at the old ladies—
and that was just lately.
Imagine that…
a grown man talking crazy.

He’s so tall,
with a voice that echoes through the hall.
He told me,
“Stand on the wall.”

Like discipline was a game,
like embarrassment was the goal.
Like breaking people down
was the way to take control.

Just wait till I tell you
about what happened in the fall.

I heard him call,
a voice so stern
it made my insides burn.

But something in me
started to turn.

Because fear only lasts
until courage learns to speak.
And power isn’t loud voices
making others feel weak.

So now I stand taller
than the shadow he tried to cast.

And the truth is—
men like Mr. First
never last.

But the students who rise,
the ones who remember,
the ones who learn strength
in moments like November…

We grow.
We learn.
We become something better
than the lessons he tried to teach at all.
