DILLON COUNTY EMS SUPERVISOR MICHAEL SAPP TO SPEAK AT 9/11 EVENT ON COURTHOUSE STEPS
The Dillon County South Carolina Veterans of the Year Organization (DCSCVOYO) will hold its annual Patriot Day ceremony on the steps of the Dillon County Courthouse on Thursday, 9/11 at 9AM. Patriot Day is observed each year in remembrance of all those who were injured, and the 2,977 killed from the 4 coordinated terrorist attacks at the Twin Towers in NYC, the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and a field outside Shanksville PA on 9/11/2001. The deadliest foreign attack on the United States since Pearl Harbor. In Dillon on this 9/11, as has been the practice for the past 24 years, the DCSCVOYO invites our citizenry to gather at the steps of our courthouse to remember the events of 9/11/2001 and those injured or killed. First responders were so very important in saving lives that day, and even themselves became victims. Remembering them, the Dillon program on 9/11 will acknowledge the ongoing work of local first responders and emphasize their commitment and sacrifice to the citizens of Dillon, Latta, Lake View, and throughout Dillon County.
DCSCVOYO Commander Thom Thompson will open the program, and First Presbyterian Church of Dillon Ruling Elder Kay McGirt will begin the program with a prayer for America. Dillon County Council Chairman Stevie Grice will give welcoming remarks.

DCSCVOYO COMMANDER THOM THOMPSON
“We at the DCSCVOYO remember on this Patriot Day 2025, the events of 9/11/2001 and the bravery that day of those first responders. We are thankful for all our local first responders throughout our communities, and for those service members now serving in the United States Military defending America everyday both at home and deployed. We remember on Patriot Day all those who served following 9/11/2001 from Dillon County and especially those who died during the Global War on Terror – Anthony C. Owens died in Iraq 2/1/2006, Edward O. Philpot died in Afghanistan 10/23/2007, and James D. Bullard died in Afghanistan 10/30/2007.”
Army Major General James E. Lockemy will recall the events of 9/11/2001, the subsequent Global War on Terrorism, and acknowledge our local first responders.
Special First Responder Recognition:
Firefighter Benji Long of Latta Fire Department Station Two
Dillon County EMS Supervisor Michael Sapp is the program speaker and will speak from the steps of the courthouse about the importance of remembering the events of 9/11/2001, and especially the lives lost, and the families that were changed forever. He is a DHS graduate 1998 and holds a BA from North Greenville University and a Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theology Seminary. He worked as a youth pastor and then the Associate Pastor to Students at First Baptist Church Dillon. In addition to his church work, he has worked for the City of Dillon Fire Department and Dillon Rescue, and later the Dillon County Fire Department. Presently, he works full time with Dillon County EMS as an EMT, paramedic, and serves as a shift supervisor. He is continuing his church work at Pyerian Baptist Church where he serves as a deacon and pulpit supply preaching as needed. He and Brandy Sapp have been married for 15 years. He enjoys being in the woods, on the lake, and woodworking in his shop.
DCSCVOYO members Lloyd Brown and Asa McDuffie will lower and replace the Dillon County flag as has been the tradition each Patriot Day. (Replacement flag provided by Woodmen Life).
Dillon County Council Chairman Stevie Grice will ceremoniously move the Memorial Wreath to the top of the courthouse steps memorializing those who died on 9/11/2001 and the subsequent Global War on Terrorism. (Wreath donated by DCSCVOYO Member Ronnie Stone)
DCSCVOYO member Justin Foxworth will have TAPS played.

DILLON VETERANS SQUARE IMPROVEMENTS
Commander Thom Thompson worked with our county administrator to have the stone marker raised to be more visible and centered in its place. Also, you will see in the background the 1st of 2 benches being added. The monkey grass around the tall monument will be removed, and improvements to the concrete ramps up and onto the speaker/guests area are being made to eliminate trip hazards. The city has cut the greenery from hanging over the Memorial Wall, and fixed the pulley on the American flag pole that had been binding. The city will also continue to treat for fire ants and level depressions. The city will make edging the grass/concrete areas a priority when mowing. Many thanks to County Administrator Tim Harper and his grounds supervisor Tony Caulder, and to City Manager Burt Rogers.

Paws for the Arts Brings Community Together

The Carolinas Art Guild and the Dillon County Humane Society hosted Paws for the Arts on Thursday, September 5, 2025, at Twin Lakes Country Club. A large crowd turned out for the special evening, which featured art exhibits and sales from talented local artists, delicious food, and plenty of fellowship. Dan E. Lockemy kept the audience entertained throughout the night.

“We are so grateful for the support for the Humane Society of Dillon County,” said Mary McDaniel. “The money raised at Paws for the Arts will be used to help our needy Dillon County animals. Our partnership with the Carolinas Art Guild has enabled us to support our animal welfare programs financially, while also spotlighting the talents of our amazing local artists.”

This year’s event introduced a new feature, Drawings for Donated Gifts, where guests purchased $1 tickets for chances to win a variety of items. Two silent auctions were also offered: a portable smart speaker donated by Laurie and Mike Thompson of Thompson Security and Electric, and a 150-pound hog, delivered to the butcher at the bidder’s convenience, donated by Wendy and Mike Reaves of Reaves Livestock.

Emily Stonerock had the winning bid for the donated hog, while Wendy Reaves placed the top bid on the portable speaker.

MEET JAKE: Dillon County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services PET OF THE WEEK

Jake, the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office Animal Protective Services Pet of the Week, is pictured with his ear cocked and eyes alert — watching, waiting, and hoping his forever family will come down the road. This handsome boy has spent many lonely days and nights at the Dillon Shelter with that same hope in his heart. Picked up as a stray when he was just a skinny, abandoned puppy, Jake has been at the shelter since March 2024. For more than a year and a half, he has watched potential adopters pass by his kennel and leave with other dogs. Yet, Jake’s long stay has not broken his spirit. Now two years old, he is healthy, happy, and full of life. He enjoys playing with other dogs and loves spending time with volunteers. During his recent photo shoot, he rolled joyfully in the grass, played with everyone he met, and even hopped into a volunteer’s car as if ready for an adventure. Jake is ready for a fresh start — a home where he will be loved and cherished as he deserves. Could you be the one to finally give him that chance? If you’re interested in adopting Jake, call Deputy Richard Lee at 843-841-8884 and let him know you’re coming. Adoption fees are still waived for approved adopters.

THE 2025 COLUMBUS SCHOOLS REUNION HELD
Lake View, S.C. – The 2025 Columbus Schools Reunion was held Friday, August 29th, and Saturday, August 30th, bringing together graduates, former students, and friends for two days of fellowship, cultural reflection, and recognition of leaders. The mission of this year’s gathering was both celebration and regeneration of Columbus Schools, while also honoring the life and legacy of Professor Stephen David Scott, who instilled in his students the belief: “He can who thinks he can.”

Columbus High School graduated its final class in 1970, after which students transitioned to the integrated Lake View High School. The Columbus Reunion Committee, established in 2000, continues to preserve this proud legacy. Committee Chairperson Brenda Green Arnette, Columbus High School Class of 1967, along with a dedicated group of volunteers, takes pride in the unselfish work of preserving Columbus history and encourages alumni and friends to continue supporting the reunion for years to come.
Friday evening featured a community Fish Fry at the Lake View Community Center. Attendees enjoyed performances from renowned poet and author Felton Eaddy, a 1967 graduate of Columbus High, and Rev. Jacqueline Utley, a 1975 graduate of Lake View High School, who delivered a stirring rendition of Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I A Woman?” The evening continued with music by Tim Cousar, as alumni and friends filled the dance floor.
On Saturday, the celebration shifted to Brandi’s Banquet Hall in Dillon, SC for a formal event. Music for the event was provided by Tim Cousar and photography by Lee McRae, rounding out an evening of celebration.
The program recognized three distinguished honorees:
● Reverend Jacqueline Utley, trailblazing pastor and the first African American woman ordained in the South Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
● Dennis Thompson, Jr., longtime educator, superintendent, and current Hampton County Council member, honored for his many contributions to education and community betterment.
Felton Eaddy, acclaimed poet, singer, arts educator, and professor, recognized for his decades of creative and cultural impact.
Milestone classes were recognized, including the Columbus High School Classes of 1955, 1960, 1965, and 1970, along with the Lake View High School Class of 1975. A special tribute was given to the 2023–2024 Lake View High School Varsity Girls Basketball Team, who captured the state championship in March 2024. At the 2023 reunion, the 1970 Columbus High School Girls Basketball Team was honored for their historic Class A State Championship victory, since the 50th anniversary in 2020 could not be celebrated due to the pandemic.
The weekend underscored a shared commitment to honor the history of Columbus Schools while creating new opportunities for connection among alumni and friends.
