We received the sad news last night that noted railroad photographer Bob Wilt passed away. The following statement is from GPCo president Rudy Garbely:
"Bob was one of my earliest supporters, back when I was just a freshman at Moravian College who walked a mile and a half each way in the snow on Tuesday nights with a backpack full of HO models to hang out with him and the rest of the crew at the Black Diamond Society of Model Engineers. Bob was also super supportive a few years later when I was working on my college honors thesis on the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Bob invited me into his home and gave me access to his lifetime's worth of research materials. When I eventually published my thesis as GPCo's first book, Bob let me use a plethora of his amazing photos to enhance and expand my text.
"That book was my entry into the publishing business and the catalyst that jumpstarted what is now my career. Since then, Bob has been a frequent contributor to all of GPCo's books over the past 13 years. We owe a lot of what GPCo is now to Bob's generosity when I was still young, inexperienced, and impressionable. He was a unique and wonderful man, and he will be sorely missed."
Bob photographed trains all over the northeast starting in the early 1960s, and he was still exclusively shooting slides (Fujichrome) in 2025. He shot both roster and scenic views, and he had his collection meticulously sorted between these two categories. He had an entire room in his house dedicated to housing the slide collection, and he could pull out a slide of any specific location or piece of equipment in 30 seconds or less. The rapidity with which he could access information and images made him an extremely valuable resource for researchers, historians, and authors.
In memory of Bob, here's one of his amazing scenic photos from a slide in GPCo's own collection - a May 11, 1977 Conrail freight rolling along the ex-L&NE Cement Secondary through Bath, Pennsylvania. Clear signals ahead on your journey, Bob!
