For those of us composers, arrangers, and copyists, one of the most monumental notation softwares is expiring. Finale will no longer be produced or receive any further updates. MakeMusic has arranged a discount for Steinberg's Dorico.

I've read and heard positive words about Dorico but have no experience with that software. After about thirteen years of using Finale, I switched to Sibelius and within merely two weeks I was creating better looking and sounding work. After learning a few basics, Sibelius is far more intuitive than Finale, which constantly forced me to look up how to perform many tasks that are simple in Sibelius.

My biggest complaint about Sibelius is that it is not more integrated with Pro Tools. AVID owns both and I expect there are many in my situation who would love to be able to edit in one and have those results instantly reflected in the other.

My parents have complained for many years about how particular I am about handling music equipment, not letting just anyone who doesn't know what they're doing move things, being very specific about how things have to be packed and travel, et cetera. My mother accidentally broke one of my iPad holders recently, as have others in the past.

In fact, over the years, I have bought several of these iPad mounts just to keep two working for gigs. They are expensive. Such a relief that individual parts are finally available to save money and repair only what broke. Hope I still have more of my old broken ones that I can refurbish for active duty again.

One of the replacement parts are new arms that are long enough to hold 12.9" iPads. As shown in this photo, they come in different lengths and the shorter ones won't let a larger iPad fit. I was able to cobble together one working system for a gig a couple weeks ago, should have two again after these repairs.

I have provided gigs for hundreds of musicians over the past dozen plus years and have experienced many things. With very short notice, I recently tried to assist someone by finding a harpist who could accompany me playing violin. As expected, everyone was already booked. What was wonderful about the experience was that every single harpist I contacted replied, all but one within just hours. Really nice to experience such rare professionalism!
