In grocery retail, geography always matters — but in Puerto Rico, geography defines everything. The island’s food system operates under permanent constraints: long shipping lanes, import dependency, freight volatility and climate exposure.

When the mainland feels a ripple, Puerto Rico feels a wave.

Despite importing roughly 85 percent of its food, the market remains dominated by local supermarket chains.

Despite intense pressure from global big-box competitors, neighborhood banners continue to hold share.

And despite supply-chain shocks that would paralyze many markets, the system continues to function.

Presidente Supermarket celebrated the grand opening of a new store in Miami Gardens, its third location in this South Florida city.

New customers filled shopping carts and praised the store’s variety and “buenos precios.” Grocery aisles display a broad lineup of items from the Caribbean, Central and South American countries.

“It’s awesome,” said general manager Ariel Martinez.

At the music-filled celebration, local elected officials and other members of the community joined Presidente leaders for the ribbon-cutting. The store spans 26,000 square feet, features a cafeteria, prepared foods area and employs approximately 80 people.
