Locals in the Netherlands vowed to never forget the American soldiers who gave their lives in the fight to liberate towns and villages during World War II, so the Dutch citizens have adopted the graves of every single fallen U.S. Soldier—all 8,288 headstones as well as the 1,722 names on the Tablets of the Missing in the cemetery’s Court of Honor.

They care and maintain the cemetery as a continued way to say Thank You for providing them with .......... FREEDOM.

In the Netherlands at the American Cemetery, grave adoption has been practiced since World War II. Dutch citizens adopt the graves of fallen American soldiers to honor their sacrifice and remember their role in liberating the Netherlands.
