⏰ We need to talk about the long-running, agonizing saga that is the Sunshine Protection Act.
The House of Representatives literally just voted 308–117 to pass the bill to make Daylight Saving Time permanent. Finally, some good news, right? We might actually "lock the clock" and stop the biannual madness of changing our clocks. President Trump has said he’s ready to sign it, meaning the ball is officially in the Senate’s court.
But what are the actual odds of this clearing the Senate? Honestly, it's a 50/50 toss-up based on what I have read. I'm not a political expert and steer clear it of opinions, but this isn't my opinion about it—it's just the result of the vote going either way.
🚌 The Dark Morning Dilemma: While everybody loves extra evening sun in the winter, permanent DST means the sun wouldn't rise in some parts of the country until nearly 9:00 AM in December. Parents are understandably terrified of their kids waiting for the school bus in the freezing, pitch-black dark. (Note: my kids get on the bus in the dark from December to early February because of the timing of the route anyway.)
🧠 The Sleep Science War: The biggest hurdle isn't people who love changing clocks—it’s the medical community. The American Medical Association (AMA) and sleep scientists are aggressively lobbying against it, arguing that if we lock the clock, we should lock it on Standard Time because human bodies are biologically wired to wake up with morning light. 🧬
⏳ We've been here before: Congress actually tried permanent DST in 1974. It was highly unpopular, led to kids walking to school in absolute darkness, and was repealed in under eight months because the public revolted. 🛑
So while the House delivered a massive bipartisan win to "ditch the switch," the Senate is staring down a regional battle of "More Evening Light" vs. "Pitch-Black Mornings." 🥊
Where do you stand on this? Are you:
☀️ Team Permanent Daylight Saving Time (give me that late winter sunset!)
🌅 Team Permanent Standard Time (let there be morning light!)
