Erin is now a hurricane in the Atlantic, the first of the season. Strengthening will continue, with major hurricane status likely in the future. A curve northward is expected, with an eventual turn to the northeast next week. -David

While a lot of focus is on Erin, let me draw your attention to the tropical wave emerging into the Atlantic from Africa. This wave will move westward and may develop towards the end of next week. The long-range modeling is split, with some showing a track northward like Erin, while others showing a track into the Gulf. All depends on the evolution of the sprawling high pressure over the Atlantic. Late-August has a long history of big storms in the Gulf, so pay attention! -David

Confidence is high in Erin becoming a hurricane, likely a major hurricane, as it curves northward over the Atlantic and then to the northeast. The model consensus is the US will avoid major impacts, outside of high surf next week along the Eastern Seaboard. The trend is good, but we're still watching it.

I'm really interested in tracking what comes next. The tropical wave moving off the coast now will be near the Lesser Antilles a week from now. The long-range track is questionable, with some chance of weakness developing again over the Western Atlantic, allowing a similar track to Erin. However, there's a chance the high pressure out in the Atlantic holds, allowing the following waves to move more westward, towards the Gulf. Development is possible.

As hurricane season ramps up, be sure to stay informed! -David

Tropical Storm Erin is just days away from becoming 2025's first Atlantic hurricane, with more likely to follow as we approach the peak of hurricane season. With this in mind, David and I strolled through Dothan on Wednesday to determine who knew when the season's peak is reached, and ask people to recall the hurricanes they've experienced for this week's Weather In Words! -Ryan

Meteorologist Zack Webster peeks into the past peak hurricane seasons to reveal the number of hurricanes that have occurred between August 13 and September 24 over the last 25 years.

Chief Meteorologist David Paul and I were "posing up a storm" last night on Weather Extra as we checked out some chummy clouds David caught on camera to and from Auburn. The tropical moisture that's been churning over the Deep South this week creates neat, bubbly clouds of different shapes and sizes, making it easy to draw figures out of them with the naked eye!

Drop your own pictures of cool cloud formations you've seen in the comments below! And you can check out more from last night's Weather Extra by clicking the link below as well. -Ryan

This is interesting. Based on where Tropical Storm Erin is located Wednesday, there's a 0% chance of the system moving over the Florida Panhandle based on data from 1886-2020! We can never say never in weather, but this data is fascinating. -David

Long-range guidance is rather tightly-clustered for Erin, with the most likely track northward across the Western Atlantic. The Google DeepMind Ensembles and ECMWF Ensembles are in good agreement as Erin, perhaps a major hurricane by sometime this weekends, finds weakness in the flow between two areas of high pressure.

What will be most interesting for the Gulf Coast states is the evolution of the pattern that follows. Some of the model guidance towards the end of August shows the subsequent tropical waves taking more of a westward track. If these develop, a tropical cyclone somewhere in the Gulf looks possible. Lots of time to watch what comes next, but I'll be paying close attention to a tropical wave that emerges off the African coast this Friday, with another one due to emerge on Monday. -David
