We need to honor their sacrifice and the losses in New York & D.C. each and every day . . . . not just today!!

Years ago, I came across a transcript of a conversation between Tom Burnett, and his wife, Deena. Tom was a passenger on Flight 93, who was in contact with his wife moments before he and several others rushed the cockpit and brought down the plane. I shared their conversation here two years ago, because every time people say "never forget," this is what I think of. It's strange, because I have my own memories and my own personal stories about that day, but whenever I hear "never forget," I remember a conversation I didn't have. A conversation I hope to never have. A conversation between a man who caught an earlier flight, because he was so anxious to get home to his family, and the wife he would never see again.

It's painful to read, but I'm sharing it again because I choose to remember, and hope you do, too.

---------

6:27 a.m.( pacific time) First cell phone call from Tom to Deena

Deena: Hello
Tom: Deena
Deena: Tom, are you O.K.?
Tom: No, I’m not. I’m on an airplane that has been hijacked.
Deena: Hijacked?
Tom: Yes, They just knifed a guy.
Deena: A passenger?
Tom: Yes.
Deena: Where are you? Are you in the air?
Tom: Yes, yes, just listen. Our airplane has been hijacked. It’s United Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco. We are in the air. The hijackers have already knifed a guy, one of them has a gun, they are telling us there is a bomb on board, please call the authorities.
6:31 Deena calls 911

6:34 The phone rang in on call waiting, Tom’s second cell phone call.

Deena: Hello
Tom: They’re in the cockpit. The guy they knifed is dead.
Deena: He’s dead?
Tom: Yes. I tried to help him, but I couldn’t get a pulse.
Deena: Tom, they are hijacking planes all up and down the east coast. They are taking them and hitting designated targets. They’ve already hit both towers of the World Trade Center.
Tom: They’re talking about crashing this plane. (a pause) Oh my God. It’s a suicide mission…(he then tells people sitting around him)
Deena: Who are you talking to?
Tom: My seatmate. Do you know which airline is involved?
Deena: No, they don’t know if they’re commercial airlines or not. The news reporters are speculating cargo planes, private planes and commercial. No one knows.
Tom: How many planes are there?
Deena: They’re not sure, at least three. Maybe more.
Tom: O.K….O.K….Do you know who is involved?
Deena: No.
Tom: We’re turning back toward New York. We’re going back to the World Trade Center. No, wait, we’re turning back the other way. We’re going south.
Deena: What do you see?
Tom: Just a minute, I’m looking. I don’t see anything, we’re over a rural area. It’s just fields. I’ve gotta go.

6:45 a.m. Third cell phone call from Tom to Deena

Tom: Deena
Deena: Tom! you’re O.K! (She thought at this point he had just survived the Pentagon plane crash).
Tom: No, I’m not.
Deena: They just hit the Pentagon.
Tom: (tells people sitting around him “They just hit the Pentagon.”)
Tom: O.K….O.K. What else can you tell me?
Deena: They think five airplanes have been hijacked. One is still on the ground. They believe all of them are commercial planes. I haven’t heard them say which airline, but all of them have originated on the east coast.
Tom: Do you know who is involved?
Deena: No
Tom: What is the probability of their having a bomb on board? I don’t think they have one. I think they’re just telling us that for crowd control.
Deena: A plane can survive a bomb if it’s in the right place.
Tom: Did you call the authorities?
Deena: Yes, they didn’t know anything about your plane.
Tom: They’re talking about crashing this plane into the ground. We have to do something. I’m putting a plan together.
Deena: Who’s helping you?
Tom: Different people. Several people. There’s a group of us. Don’t worry. I’ll call you back.

6:54 a.m. Fourth cell phone call to Tom to Deena

Deena: Tom?
Tom: Hi. Anything new?
Deena: No
Tom: Where are the kids?
Deena: They’re fine. They’re sitting at the table having breakfast. They’re asking to talk to you.
Tom: Tell them I’ll talk to them later.
Deena: I called your parents. They know your plane has been hijacked.
Tom: Oh…you shouldn’t have worried them. How are they doing?
Deena: They’re O.K.. Mary and Martha are with them.
Tom: Good.
(a long quiet pause)
Tom: We’re waiting until we’re over a rural area. We’re going to take back the airplane.
Deena: No! Sit down, be still, be quiet, and don’t draw attention to yourself! (The exact words taught to me by Delta Airlines Flight Attendant Training).
Tom: Deena! If they’re going to crash this plane into the ground, we’re going to have do something!
Deena: What about the authorities?
Tom: We can’t wait for the authorities. I don’t know what they could do anyway. It’s up to us. I think we can do it.
Deena: What do you want me to do?
Tom: Pray, Deena, just pray.
(after a long pause)
Deena: I love you.
Tom: Don’t worry, we’re going to do something...

A blessed Labor Day from all of us at The Living Wyoming & Mystic Light Images!! Here are some beautiful images Robert took while we were putting Book #4 together covering over 5,800 miles in Northwestern Wyoming!!
"Happy Labor Day to our Wyoming Friends 🙂
Here are some nice memories from when we left the Green River Lakes area, got on Union Pass Rd. and headed back north to Dubois for the night. As we got a bit up the road, the sunset was settling in and there were awesome Wyoming skies to WOW us!!. The sunset kept developing and we were so happy to be in the right spots to capture these images as we moved further north. Here are a few of what we got to see. Robert, his camera and I were so blessed to be in the right places at the right times!! 🙂 "

Anyone who follows our The Living Wyoming adventures - or has purchased our books - we would encourage you to donate to CURE Childhood Cancer in Atlanta, in Mary Elizabeth's name. We've been a supporter of theirs for several years and recognize the amazing work they do for our kids and grandkids.

Today we honor and remember Mary Elizabeth Paris on the 7th anniversary of her passing after a battle with AML. Her family has continued her fight by joining two other families to create the United for a CURE Fund at CURE. Together they have funded almost $1 million in research that will lead to safer and more effective treatments for children with AML. What an amazing legacy!

Folks - getting away from the Interstates is where you'll discover The Living Wyoming!! :-)

Here are a few interesting shots, by Robert of Mystic Light Images, from our first "The Living Wyoming" book. These concrete arrows were placed along the old Air Mail routes - long before radios & electronic navigation systems were available - for the pilots to use to stay on course. Most of these have long since been torn up, but we were lucky enough to find one in a beautiful setting!! Please remember, Robert offers literally thousands of images on his Mystic Light Images FB page, that were taken over the 6 & 1/2 year, 23,000 mile adventure, that makes up our 4 book collection!! You can use the link below to get YOUR COPY of "Exploring the Southeast Quadrant" :-)

"Happy Weekend My Friends 🙂
Here is another fun time we had while working on Book #1 covering the Southeast of Wyoming. We went to a "Arrow Postal Hill". It was nice to find and while we were there late in the day, the sunset started coming on in the sky. Here it is and you can see what we saw. SO much fun!! 🙂 "

Here's a nice one from Robert at Mystic Light Images!!
"Hello to our Wyoming Friends 🙂
Here's a cool place to go to and explore. This is the historic Carissa Mine, just 1/2 mile north of South Pass City in Southwest Wyoming. We saw so many wonderful places while working on our four book "The Living Wyoming" series."

"Happy Sunday My Friends 😊
Here is a fun memory that I have from when we rode the back roads in the Southwest part of Wyoming. We headed out to explore the ruins of Fort LaClede and the LaClede Stage Station". This was so much fun to track down and explore, and the Desert landscapes surrounding this area are so beautiful. These are located just south of Delaney Rim & about 10 or 12 miles north of Adobe Town off BLM roads 4409 & 4410 by Bitter Creek. I created this video for you to see a few of the photos I took here. Click to expand and we hope you'll enjoy 😊"

"Hello My Friends :)
It's been truly wonderful putting smiles on your faces with some of the photos we were blessed to capture and enjoy while covering the entire state for our "The Living Wyoming" books! Here are a few from the Flaming Gorge area south of Green River - what a great spot to explore! We took a back road from Hwy.191 south of Green River and ended up in the Firehole Campground area. The views are so amazing to see here! :) Anybody need any more proof that Wyoming is one of the most beautiful states in our incredible country?"

From Robert Edgerton at Mystic Light Images!!
"Hello Wyoming Friends!! :-)
We want to share with you a very cool spot we found when we drove out WY-170, heading to see the Legend Rock Petroglyphs for Book #4 in The Living Wyoming series - Exploring the Northwest Quadrant. About a half mile after turning north on WY-170, we spotted this old, one-room schoolhouse. Researching later showed it was built around 1910 as the Padlock School, and was later (around 1940) renamed as the Arapaho School. Can you imagine the kids going to school here so many years ago? I wonder if they had a lot of fun there? :-) "

Has it really been 53 years already since Neil Armstrong left the first human footprint on the Moon? As a tribute . . . here's a composite image from Book #3 of The Living Wyoming series "Exploring the N.E. Quadrant" (pages 70 & 71) showcasing the total solar eclipse and the majesty of our Moon!! This was Robert's (Mystic Light Images) first attempt at any kind of astrophotography . . . not too shabby huh??!!
