Where’s the crowd that’s been arguing for or against the water rate increase on social media?

On Wednesday night, the Community Outreach Meeting took place, where an independent consultant working for the City of Downey outlined plans to upgrade groundwater infrastructure and improve water quality, along with the proposed rate increases set to take effect on January 14.

Only about ten residents attended the meeting. What wasn’t clearly explained is that the increase amounts to a gradual 100% hike.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on the rate increase next Tuesday, January 13.

Venezuela’s military held a funeral Wednesday in the capital, Caracas, for some of the dozens of soldiers killed during the U.S. operation that captured then-President Nicolás Maduro.

Music from a military orchestra echoed over the cemetery as family members and soldiers marched behind a row of caskets. Men carried the wooden caskets cloaked in the Venezuelan flag past rows of uniformed officers. The funeral came a day after acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a seven-day mourning period for the fallen officers.

Good, a resident of Minneapolis, was mourned as a cherished member of the community who was known as compassionate and giving.

Thousands of destroyed houses are being rebuilt or are in the planning stages. Los Angeles city and county officials have issued more than 2,600 building permits.

In Pacific Palisades, schools in the burn scar have started to reopen. Debris by the ton has been trucked away. But 12 months later, the disaster remains a raw wound — economically, politically, geographically, environmentally and even psychologically.

Credit: • One year ago, historic fires raged through two different Los Angeles communities. An extraordinarily dry winter and strong Santa Ana winds led to a wildfire that devastated the Pacific Palisades neighborhood and adjacent areas. Later that same day, a different wildfire swept through the unincorporated community of Altadena. 31 people died, and thousands of homes and other structures were destroyed.

Over the course of five weeks in L.A., photographer captured 129 portraits, meeting the displaced in the charred remains of their houses, businesses, and places of worship. By documenting the aftermath of the fires with the survivors among the ruins of their former homes, he hopes to give them some closure as they decide how to move on from the disaster.
