A moment of Detroit Zen. But possibly not for long.

Yes, this is in the city of Detroit. It’s the canals on the far east side, approximately in the Jefferson-Chalmers area.

I was at an event today (story to come on our site and show) hoping to save these canals, as advocates from the Jefferson Chalmers Water Project say one of the anti-flooding measures proposed, stop logs - would turn the canals into a swamp. That’s what the city officials during the last administration chose to do with grant money, but work hasn’t started yet.

Many residents today were advocating for another solution from the Army Corps of engineers for new seawalls and “riprap” or engineered natural barriers instead, permanently addressing the fact the neighborhood is a designated flood plain; and making it so they wouldn’t be reliant on the city to decide if they had access to the river or their canals would have fresh water.

It’s one of Detroit’s most special places. Always enjoy coming out here. As I said, more to come.

It’s Saturday and we’re a small team, but wanted to make sure to get a post out from today.

In Gotham, Batman had a Batcave; deep in the Metro Detroit suburbs, Keith has a GnomeHome, devoted to Vernors memorabilia.

There's gonna be a big Vernors block party in Eastern Market on Sunday afternoon. It looks like fun.

Hey friends, Jer here. Vernors is intrinsic to Detroit's culinary DNA. Considering it was invented by a pharmacist, it's not surprising that so many parents here told us to fix any stomach issue by drinking some of the gingery stuff. Heck, I recently saw a Kevin Hart skit

This is absurd and I just want to share it with you. Also, the first Pheasant Flock Party is this Saturday, even though it's someone else's pheasant. We all party together.

Is Michigan leaving a billion dollars from Dan Gilbert on the table for Detroit’s riverfront (and the RenCen) because they can’t make a decision?

The CEO of Bedrock, Jared Fleisher, shared his frustration as the state can’t seem to make decisions around Transformational Brownfield projects across the state.

In many areas of Michigan, development projects to reuse or rehab land or buildings don’t “pencil out” or make financial sense without some non-cash incentives that the developer can then use to help offset the costs.

Michigan is losing our young people to other states at alarming rates. If we want to reverse that, the data shows it’s by having job options (people now expect and need many jobs because people switch careers more), real transit, and supporting our natural and outdoor spaces.

And US Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow says there’s an important role for officials in DC to help support that work.

Everyone’s looking for a deal, so here’s four big sales where you can buy someone else’s stuff this weekend.

Spring 2026 is here and it's time to hunt for a deal, with neighborhood and citywide yard sales in and around Detroit. Here are four I know about, and I'm sure I'll be at a couple of them: * Historic Indian Village Yard Sale (Detroit) – The historic east side neighborhood hosts
