A moment of Detroit Zen. But possibly not for long.
Yes, this is in the city of Detroit. It’s the canals on the far east side, approximately in the Jefferson-Chalmers area.
I was at an event today (story to come on our site and show) hoping to save these canals, as advocates from the Jefferson Chalmers Water Project say one of the anti-flooding measures proposed, stop logs - would turn the canals into a swamp. That’s what the city officials during the last administration chose to do with grant money, but work hasn’t started yet.
Many residents today were advocating for another solution from the Army Corps of engineers for new seawalls and “riprap” or engineered natural barriers instead, permanently addressing the fact the neighborhood is a designated flood plain; and making it so they wouldn’t be reliant on the city to decide if they had access to the river or their canals would have fresh water.
It’s one of Detroit’s most special places. Always enjoy coming out here. As I said, more to come.
It’s Saturday and we’re a small team, but wanted to make sure to get a post out from today.
