Aaron Stanfield has driven Pro Stock, Pro Mod and Factory Stock cars. Then Richard Freeman put him in a Top Fueler. He figured the big surprise would come when he stepped on the gas.

Wrong. The real education came farther downtrack when the clutch started coming in. Eventually, Stanfield got one beyond 300 mph and came within one run of completing his Top Fuel license.

And if somebody wants to put him in a Funny Car next? “If it's got four wheels, I'm in.”

What began as a safety inspection became one of the biggest controversies in the Pro Mod pits at Indy. NHRA threw out all three qualifying runs from Scott Tidwell’s car after finding a modified screw-supercharger rotor support, leaving Jason Collins one final shot to make the U.S. Nationals field. He didn’t.

Now Tidwell questions the rulebook, while NHRA National Tech Director Lonnie Grim explains why officials believed they couldn’t ignore what they found.
