He grew up in Africa so the 90s R&B pipeline never reached him 😂😭 we clearly did not have the same musical upbringing. He had NO idea what was happening the entire time meanwhile I was naming songs before the intro even hit. He always tells me that Akon is one of the few U.S. artists he knew before coming to the states. He had no idea what he was saying though, just vibed to the beat since he didn’t learn English until he moved here.

5 days postpartum. He fit right in my arms. I couldn’t see past the next feeding, the next diaper, the next hour I had to survive.

11 months later. How did we get here? He’s walking down hallways holding my hand now.

I didn’t feel it happening. It just felt like survival, like I’d never sleep again, never feel like myself again.

But somewhere between “he just fit in my arms” and watching him walk away from me, I became a mom. I just couldn’t see it happening in real time.
